“Poor Creatures” is another film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, which caused great emotions among viewers and critics. The modernized story known to us for years from the novel “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley is just a starting point for a series of considerations that will undoubtedly appear in the mind of everyone who sees the Greek’s latest work.
“Poor Creatures” is a sure candidate for the Oscar
The film impresses with its aesthetics, direction and acting. Since its premiere, “Poor Things” has received as many as 110 nominations for prestigious awards such as Critics’ Choice, BAFTA and Golden Globes. The film has already won 22 times (that’s how many awards it has received so far), but fans of the film are eagerly waiting for the Academy’s verdict on this year’s Oscars. “Poor Creatures” was nominated 11 times, but the competition is huge.
Emma Stone has a chance for the statuette for best actress in a leading role, here her biggest rival seems to be Lily Gladstone, who starred in “The Bloody Moon”. It won’t be easy for Lanthimos in the best director category either. Hot on his heels are, for example, Jonathan Glazer – the creator of the masterfully directed “Business Zone” and Christopher Nolan – widely appreciated for “Oppenheimer”. However, there is almost no doubt that at least one of the 11 nominations for “Poor Things” will result in an award.
“Poor creatures.” Where to watch online?
The film can still be seen in cinemas across Poland, but many viewers are waiting for the film in streaming. The exact release date on VOD has not been announced yet. From February 27, the picture was to be available for rental online on Apple TV and Prime Video, but the offer is still not available in Poland. Dinsey’s Searchlight Pictures studio is responsible for distributing the production, so we can already guess that the Greek’s work will be released on the Disney+ platform in some time.
At the moment, we also know that “Poor Creatures” will be released on March 12 on DVD and Blu-Ray. The physical edition of the film (and those available for rental online) will include additional behind-the-scenes materials titled “Possessing Beauty”. The recordings feature the cast and crew as well as interviews about the making of the film. A real treat for fans of the film will be three deleted scenes titled “The Brothel Doctor”, “Alfi’s Chapter” and “Bella’s Diary”.
The film was based on the book by Alasdair Gray, which differs dramatically from the cinematic version in the ending of the story. Will the deleted scenes shed some light on people who haven’t read the novel and that’s why they didn’t appear in the film? We will know the answer soon.
