He played a psychopathic killer in “Dune 2”. “On the set he behaved as if he was possessed”

Austin Butler played the terrifying Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in the second part of “Dune”. This time he had to approach the role differently than in “Elvis”. There was no option to live like Feyd-Rautha, because the crew on the set would be in danger.

and talked about working on the set of the second part of “Dune” in an interview with “”. Butler was cast as the psychopathic Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, whose cruelty is as unpredictable and limitless as his terror. Austin Butler had to prepare for this role in a different way than usual. In previous films, the actor tried to “live” the lives of his characters – he changed not only the accent and appearance, but also the way of being and thinking. In Feyd-Rautha’s case, this was not an option.

Austin Butler on the role of Feyd-Rautha in “Dune 2”

Butler and Villeneuve talked to the Los Angeles Times about Feyd-Rautha’s portrayal in “Dune.” In the book, he is described as ruthlessly brutal and devilishly intelligent. It was quite a challenge for Butler, because he had previously worked on the king of rock’n’roll for a long time:

When I made Elvis, I lived his life for three years, that was the only thing I thought about day and night. With Feyd-Rautha, I knew it would be dangerous for my family and friends. I had to set conscious boundaries. This way I protected everyone ‘outside’ my job. Even though this role ‘infiltrated’ me, I knew I wouldn’t do anything dangerous outside of it

– he explained.

When I was preparing for it, I wondered what I would be like if I grew up in a place like this, with the Baron as a father. I found that I couldn’t just play a character that someone had written as psychotic and evil. I need to see it through his eyes

Denis Villeneuve, who was present at the conversation, added what it looked like from his perspective. The character of Feyd-Rautha appears quite late in the film, which is also a strategic move by the director. However, once Butler hits the screen, he is as cruel as possible:

When the camera was on, he acted like he was possessed on set. When the cameras were off, he still had about 25-30 percent of Feyd-Rauthy in him

– added the director and said:

There was enough of him that he was present with us, but not enough that he didn’t kill anyone on set. Now that you look at him, he is kind and gentle. But when he was in front of the camera, his aura changed, his eyes became different, his voice became different. His entire personality was changing, it was phenomenal, like I was discovering a new species of animal

“Duna 2” is receiving great reviews

The second part of Denis Villeneuve’s hit will hit cinema screens in a week. However, in recent days the first full reviews of the film have already been published. At this point, the production has 98% (!!) positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. , it is a worthy adaptation of the cult book. Austin Butler is especially praised for his role.
