Not all coins have collector value. Many factors influence this, and therefore also the price they achieve at auctions and which collectors are willing to pay. The most important thing is its condition and rarity. Even one scratch can significantly reduce the value. What also matters is the quality of minting, the year of production, and even a small detail that makes the coin a tasty treat for collectors. The rarest ones, i.e. minted in only a few or a dozen copies, fetch dizzying prices at auctions, even several dozen thousand zlotys.

One of the most sought-after, and therefore the most valuable, coins from the times of the Polish People’s Republic is the famous 10 grosze from 1973. Not every one, these are those without the mint mark. As he emphasizes, they are objects of desire mainly because of their history. They were minted not in Poland, but in the Slovak mint, Kremnica, but it is not known exactly why and in how many pieces. There is no evidence of where they were minted.
The auction of May 2023 proved how valuable an ordinary 10 groszy can be. Adding the auction fee, 10 groszy was sold for PLN 38,940. This broke the record from 2020, when the coin was sold for PLN 29.9 thousand. zloty. Back then it was also about a 10-cent coin from 1973. Such reports tempt us to frantically search drawers, caskets, attics and basements. Does this make sense?
In theory, these 10-cent coins, the most valuable on the collector’s market, have never been put into circulation, so the chance of finding them in a drawer is slim. – This is the rarest circulation coin of the Polish People’s Republic. This coin appears extremely rarely on the collector’s market. Numerous articles claim that it can be found in grandma’s drawer and sold for PLN 20,000.
