A hedge is an element of the garden that many people choose. It is not only a decoration, but also a natural fence for the property or specific parts of the yard. Some people focus on clever shapes, others prefer classic and simplicity. Regardless of our choice, we cannot forget about its proper care. When to trim a hedge? How to care for it? We give you a hint.
A physeal hedge or maybe a cherry laurel? Plant varieties
When choosing a hedge, we need to find out which species will suit us best. We can choose both coniferous and deciduous plants. Some people even choose flowering varieties that please the eyes not only with their beautiful greenery. When it comes to deciduous trees, we often choose evergreen hedges, e.g. privet and holly. Cherry laurel and boxwood are also common choices. The physalis hedge produces beautiful flowers, which is why this species also appears in our gardens. When it comes to coniferous hedges, we choose yews, junipers and spruces.
When to trim a hedge?
A hedge will beautifully decorate and fence our yard, provided we take good care of it. Periodic fertilization and watering during drought are important. Don’t forget about pruning. When we plant new plants for the hedge (this happens in autumn), they should be trimmed thoroughly in spring. Thanks to this, they will grow densely and evenly to the sides and avoid the appearance of holes. We are talking about a height of up to 20-30 cm above the ground
When to trim a hedge? Both young and several-year-old hedges are trimmed at least once a year, usually in spring. However, you should watch the weather, as frosts are not conducive to wounds caused by scissors. Many gardeners start this activity at the turn of March and April. It is always worth checking the exact characteristics of a given species, as some of them have specific requirements. However, it is assumed that the latest period in which we should trim the hedge is August. The plant must have time to heal the wounds before the first frost. Otherwise, it will be more susceptible to diseases caused by fungi.
