Failure after failure in “Question for Breakfast”. Dowbor: Why do they teach this in schools?

In the last edition of “Pytanie na śniadanie”, the guest of Katarzyna Dowbor and Filip Antonowicz was the director of TVP Nauka. Robert Szaj introduced viewers to, among other things, the figure of Nicolaus Copernicus. There were many mishaps on air.

On February 19, Katarzyna Dowbor and Filip Antonowicz welcomed viewers on TVP2. The presenters and their guests talked about various topics, such as the safety of tourists who would like to visit Iraq and the possibilities offered by our sense of smell. The results of the pre-selection for this year’s Eurovision were also announced on air. We already know that .

Failure after failure in “Question for Breakfast”

In connection with the Polish Science Day, one of the guests of “Questions for Breakfast” was the director of TVP Nauka, Robert Szaj. The guest reminded that the date is also the birthday of Nicolaus Copernicus, the world’s most popular Polish scientist, who was born exactly 551 years ago. There was a mistake at the very beginning of the conversation with the expert.

“Nicholas Copernicus is the most important figure today, indeed his work ‘On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres’ was simply groundbreaking,” Katarzyna Dowbor began the topic. Robert Szaj interrupted his speech and pointed out to the presenter a common mistake. “Nicholas Copernicus did not write such a work,” he noted.

Didn’t Copernicus write “On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres”?

The editor-in-chief of TVP Nauka explained that “On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres” is a fake title. Copernicus wrote the work “On Revolutions” and this entry appears on the scientist’s manuscript, which can be seen in Krakow. “The phrase ‘heavenly spheres’ was added by the printer to soften the revolutionary dimension of this work, because it still refers to geocentrism,” Szaj noted. “But why do they teach us differently in schools?” – Katarzyna Dowbor asked. The guest explained that it is customary to call Copernicus’s work by its printed title, but the author named it slightly differently.

“Apparently, astrology was not the main occupation and greatest love of Nicolaus Copernicus” – the presenter took up a new topic and again made a small blunder. “Nicholas Copernicus did not deal with astrology,” Szaj denied. Astrology is sometimes confused with astronomy, which Copernicus was an amateur. Astrology is a field whose aim is to try to predict the future, while astronomy is a science that studies celestial bodies and phenomena that occur mainly outside the Earth.
