Who wrote the song “Will You Come Back”? Irena Santor didn’t want to sing it
Without a doubt, one of Irena Santor’s greatest hits is the cult song “Powrotsz tu”, the lyrical layer of which was created by Janusz Kondratowicz and the music by Piotr Figiel. It was because of the second one that the singer initially wanted to give up performing it. It all started with a meeting on the radio, to which the artist invited her to present the final sound of the song. However, she was not delighted with it due to its stronger sound, completely different from the lyrical songs she had performed so far. – I didn’t like this song at all – first listen. – It wasn’t my style. I sang gentle, lyrical melodies – she talked about the reasons for her reluctance.
However, Figiel seemed completely unfazed by this and announced that this was the one he had to perform during the Festival in Opole. He added fuel to the fire when he pointed out to her that she had an exaggerated manner that should finally be put to an end, and “Will You Come Back Here” was supposed to help her with that. – It’s time to stop your mannerisms and sing something sharper – he was supposed to say. This affected her greatly, she felt humiliated and unappreciated. – I was offended. How does he undermine my entire achievements so far? – about the feelings that accompany it. – He left me with the sheet music and with a strong decision not to sing it – she said.
She sang “You will return here” in Opole. Her speech won her two awards
Santor did not hide her bitterness and was convinced all along that she would refuse to perform the song. However, she knew that she would probably have to resign from performing on the Opole stage, as there were only 2 weeks left until the festival. – When the day came to meet the orchestra, I decided I would go and just say “no”, she said. When the orchestra started rehearsal and she started listening to the next sounds, she began to notice the potential of the piece. – When they started playing this extended introduction, when I heard the piano phrase following it, I changed my mind – she recalled the moment that determined her decision.
Ultimately, “You will return here” was performed publicly for the first time in 1966 during the 4th Polish Song Festival in Opole. The audience went crazy with delight, and the singer received two awards for her performance, the first in the Premieres category and the second for Hit of the Season.
