Jan Peszek could add splendor to the cast of “Schindler’s List”. Spielberg was delighted with it
Some time ago, Jan Peszek appeared in the podcast of Kuba Wojewódzki and Piotr Kędzierski, in which he talked about his career spanning over five decades. At the same time, he revealed that he was close to becoming an international star, all thanks to the cult work. It turns out that the director himself offered him one of the main roles in the film that won seven Oscars and invited him to take part in the casting. It was his dream come true, so he agreed without hesitation. – Well, I got an offer, I learned the scenes. It was supposed to be a big role, one of the five main roles – .
He made every effort to look as good as possible, after all, it’s not every day you have the chance to perform in front of a world-famous director. He felt that this was a unique opportunity that could open the door to new opportunities, so he put a lot of pressure on himself. As it turned out after the hearing, the efforts were not in vain, but there were some difficulties in implementing the plan.
After the producer’s words, Peszek became furious. Why did he resign from the role in Spielberg’s cult work?
After the casting, Spielberg was delighted with his acting skills, which he did not hesitate to tell his colleagues. However, complications arose because he did not have full decision-making power when it came to selecting the cast. – Then producer Lew Rywin said that the director was delighted with me, but unfortunately the trade unions would not allow a Polish actor to play this role at any point – recalled Peszek. He felt not only unappreciated, but also humiliated. He became furious. – I had an attack of rage, I was making a fuss unnecessarily. Not because I felt humiliated, but because it wasn’t told to me directly. Because I wanted to take a closer look at what kind of actor I am based on this scene, he explained.
It’s true that Spielberg was determined to hire him and did everything possible, but Peszek was proud and was not convinced. – Then I saw Spielberg’s personal note: “I must have it.” But I said no, he said. He added that he didn’t want to be a part of any game. – I am completely uninterested in something that I was maneuvered into outside of my influence, outside of my awareness. For me back then, there was no name that would have withdrawn me from it – he concluded.
