Fruit in syrup or canned vegetables are a popular choice in Polish homes. But what can you do with them once they’re open? We need to be careful about one thing that we commonly do. The idea is to keep them in the fridge. This practice is controversial.

Canned fruits and vegetables, as we know them today, became popular in the 19th century of industrial food production. The first canned goods were usually closed using lead soldering, which, however, was hazardous to health. Later, safer methods were invented, such as tin soldering and can-sealing machines. Thanks to this method, seasonal fruits and vegetables could be available all year round, which contributed to their popularity.

Nowadays, canned fruit is widely available in stores around the world. It is worth considering whether they are immersed in syrup or water. Those in syrup often contain extra sugarwhich should be especially taken care of by people struggling with diabetes or insulin resistance.

Moreover, during the natural preservation process fruit may lose some of its nutritional value, such as vitamins and minerals. In addition to these aspects, it is also worth paying attention to one popular practice performed in our kitchens.

Is canned food healthy? Pay attention to storage

In an interview for the website, dietitian Justyna Pardyk draws attention to the regulations in force in the European Union that regulate the issue of packaging used to store food. Pursuant to these regulations, these packagings cannot pose a threat to consumers’ health or negatively affect the taste and smell of food products. Moreover, she added that:

Packaging must not release substances into food in amounts exceeding the established limits. Both the food products themselves and the packaging in which they are stored are subject to inspection by the relevant official bodies.

Each manufacturer is obliged to provide information on the date and method of storing food on their products.

Information on what to do after opening the package varies. Most often it is several days, from two to five, depending on the type of food.

What can you do with canned fruit once it’s opened? It’s easy

If you have no idea how to use the product from an open can immediately, do not store it in an open can in the refrigerator. This technique may cause the product to deteriorate quickly and even cause mold to appear on its surface, which is hazardous to health.. We can do it in another way. It is recommended to transfer the entire contents, i.e. fruit or vegetables along with the liquid they are in, to a jar or plastic container with a lid. Additionally, this method helps keep them fresh for longer. This is a safer and more hygienic solution that minimizes the risk of ingesting toxic substances.
