In one of the last editions of “Fakty”, the station presented a material titled “Dispute about religion”. “The Episcopacy is deeply concerned about the ideas of the Ministry of Education,” Anita Werner announced. The church doesn’t like the fact that a course may soon be removed from the list that counts toward grade point average.
Fewer and fewer students attend religion classes. “Facts” presented statistics
“In some schools, only 20 percent of students attend religion classes,” emphasized the host of “Fakty”. Adrianna OtrÄ™ba’s material emphasizes that currently religion and ethics are the only optional subjects included in the average. “This may affect the willingness to participate in these classes,” notes Karolina Prus-Wirzbicka from the “SOS for Education” Coalition.
The report also included statistics on students’ interest in religion. The author of the material presented data from the Institute of Statistics of the Catholic Church, which clearly indicates that fewer and fewer students attend the above-mentioned classes.
In 2018/2019, about 88% of students were interested in religion, the number has dropped by almost 8% in less than five years. The way the above-mentioned statistics were shown on the screen outraged Alicja Defratyka – an economist and author of the dobreliczby.pl and marathonwyborczy.pl projects.
“A supporter of economic and civic education” (as the author of the post on the X website writes about herself) published a screenshot from “Fakty” and criticized the editorial staff. “Manipulation of the scale of the chart in TVN’s ‘Fakty’ in true TVPiS style,” the economist comments.
The post sparked a lively discussion, with commenters pointing out that the statistics are absolutely true. “I am referring to the manipulation of the scale of the chart, and not to the fact that fewer and fewer students attend religion classes (which is true). In this chart, 88% is more than twice as high as 80.3%,” Defratyka notes.
The discussion also included voices defending the chart. Some X users point out that this is a normal list created in Excel, and the program generates bars of this size itself. “The Y axis probably starts at 75% and this is manipulation? This is simply a clear presentation of data, every Excel will show it the same way as TVN. The only thing they could do is add and describe the Y axis” – we read under the economist’s post.
