Many people who watched “Home Alone” for the first time as children remember the famous scene of tearing shirts and breaking pots. Karol Dziuba, who plays Kargul in Artur Żmijewski’s film “Sami swoi. Popocztek”, also plays Kargul. The actor says:
I have this memory from my childhood: ‘Sami swoi’ was broadcast and I watched this scene where one of them was breaking pots and the other was tearing up his shirts and it turned out that they were destroying their own things. And I remember paying attention to it as a child. Without knowing the context and also not understanding the story yet, I remember that this scene made me laugh. ‘Sami swoi’ is one of those references that remind me of my childhood. I remember watching this one, ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Baywatch’.
It turns out this scene wasn’t originally in the script! Originally, director Sylwester Chęciński wanted to show only the quarrel of the main characters – Kargul and Pawlak – over an egg, but he decided to expand this thread. First, he added a suggestion from one of the locals, who suggested calling Pawlak’s character “conus”. Then the destruction of pots and shirts was added.
However, the scene – as usual in such cases – required several takes. Of course, each time we had to break the pots and tear the shirts again. As in the “Good morning TVN” material, a whole trailer of clay pots arrived on the set of “Samych’s own”, but the number of shirts was a bigger problem. Before each repetition, the dresser had to quickly sew on the cut sleeves so that they could be used again.
