On February 9, 2024, “Lover, Stalker, Killer” directed by Sam Hobkinson debuted. This is another true crime documentary in the platform’s library, whose popularity has rapidly skyrocketed. It became a hit not only among viewers, but also among reviewers, who see its additional value in the plot based on it.
The new Netflix documentary tells the story of a non-obvious triangle. The case of Dave Kroup is blood-curdling
Dave Kroup is not widely known, although its beginnings date back to 2012. After breaking up with his former partner, Ama Flora, the man decided to move to Omaha, Nebraska, to be closer to his two children. Due to the fact that he began to feel lonely, he decided to set up a profile on a popular dating platform, where he met Liz Golyar. Neither of them was looking for commitments and only cared about having a nice time, which they agreed on from the very beginning.
Some time later, Dave started dating Cari Farver, whom he met at the repair shop where he was employed, and he also proposed a similar arrangement to her. Although she agreed, after a few weeks she suggested that they move in together. When he refused, four years of hell began. He received dozens of threatening messages every day and was followed almost everywhere. Soon, Cari also started stalking his former partners, setting fire to, among others, Liz’s house, but the real drama began only after the woman unexpectedly disappeared without a trace. The ending of this story does not have a happy ending and is blood-curdling.
“Lover, Stalker, Killer” is a hit on Netflix. He is already on the Top 10 podium
The creators of “Lover, Stalker, Killer” wanted to present the events from the perspective of Dave, who “was entangled in an intricate web of lies” and a love triangle. – I wanted my film to somehow reflect his confusion, and finally the shock he experienced when he finally realized what had really happened – Hobkinson in one of the interviews. Dave played himself in flashbacks, but the documentary also included statements from other people involved in the case, including: now-retired detective Chris Legrow, who led the investigation. – I thought I’d seen it all. But I’ve never seen anything like this before, he said directly.
is not a typical true crime documentary that subscribers of the website are accustomed to, as it does not focus on the perpetrator’s motives, but only analyzes the collected evidence and facts. There are also many complicated and unexpected plot twists, as evidenced by, among others: a completely non-obvious ending. Currently, “Lover, Stalker, Killer” takes second place in the Top 10 most popular films in Poland. Critics consider, among others, one of the factors influencing success: excellent editing and tension-building music.
Hobkinson deserves credit for building tension throughout the film, with music by Nick Foster as he happily flirts with Bernard Herrmann, and for the cinematography and editing that heighten the sense of disorientation and instability
– Chris Vognar from “The Rolling Stone”. His words were also supported by Joel Keller from “Decider”, who stated that although the production will not revolutionize the genre, it contains so many plot twists that it does not have to have such a goal.
