The portal’s editorial staff sent a message to TVP in the form of access to public information, asking about the costs of operating the youth website SwipeTo.pl. In addition, we were asked about employee remuneration, the amount of revenue from the website’s activities and the number of users who visited the website. Interestingly, the Mediapanel PBI/Gemius study does not include the service owned by TVP.
The youth portal of TVP, worth millions of zlotys, is visited on average by… 55,000. Internet users per month
In response, we can read that “in the entire 2023, the SwipeTo.pl portal was visited by 660,000 Internet users.” Moreover, TVP emphasized that the service’s activities were not aimed at generating revenues, and it did not comment on the operating costs at all. It was only written that “in the remaining scope, an administrative decision will be issued.”
The author of the text also draws attention to the fact that “TVP is unable to specify how 660,000 Internet users were measured, which gives an average of 55,000 per month.” He refers to the results of other leading Internet portals, as well as websites with more specialized topics, which, according to the author, if run well, “rarely have less than 0.5 million users per month”, which is a “disastrous result”.
In October, the media reported the costs of maintaining the SwipeTo.pl website, which was the result of an audit conducted by NIK employees. TVP spent PLN 21.6 million for the portal launched in October 2022 in the period from the beginning of the website to May 2023. It shows that “the creation of the SwipeTo website and application was unreliable and uneconomical.”
According to the Supreme Audit Office, the creation of the website “without any indication of the needs of young adults and without the possibility of indicating that the medium has achieved the intended effects and combined with the lack of precise guidelines for determining the remuneration of performers means that all expenses related to this project should be classified as wasteful activity.”
The SwipeTo.pl project was created during the presidency of Jacek Kurski, and launched when Mateusz Matyszkowicz became the head of TVP. The portal is aimed at young people, and the content appearing on the website covers pop culture topics, but also other topics that are of interest to Generation Z, such as fashion, mental health, ecology and new technologies.
