He failed in politics. He went to TV. Fights were the norm. Few people know that Springer had Polish roots

Jerry Springer was once called the “king of amorality.” All because of the controversial talk show he hosted for over a quarter of a century. Although his popularity did not wane over the decades, few knew that he was closely associated with Poland. Why?

Jerry Springer was born on February 13, 1944 in London to the family of Richard Springer and Margot Kallamn, who escaped from Szczecinek, Germany to Great Britain. They spent 5 years like this and then moved to the United States and settled in New York. Springer quickly became interested in politics, so after completing his compulsory education, he began studying political science at Tulane University, and later obtained a doctorate in law from Northwestern University.

Jerry Springer started out in politics. The high-profile scandal did not ruin his reputation

In the late 1960s, Springer began his career by running for Congress as a Democrat, and although he received 45% of the votes, he was unable to defeat his then rival. Later, he was elected to the Cincinnati city council, but he almost lost his position due to a scandal related to the “massage parlor” he used. When the case came to light, he showed sincerity, which impressed the public so much that in 1977 he became mayor of the city. He also tried to use this tactic 5 years later, when he ran for nomination for the governor of Ohio, but this time the plan did not bring the desired results, and the failure prompted him to leave the political scene.

He was the host of “The Jerry Springer Show”. Due to controversy, the show became a hit

He then decided to focus on his television career, which he started when he was still mayor. He often appeared on local programs, and over time he even became a reporter and political commentator. His freedom in front of the camera meant that he also started receiving other career offers. He appeared as a guest in productions such as “The X-Files” and “The Defender”, and also dubbed characters from fairy tales and animations.

The biggest breakthrough, however, came in 1991, when “The Jerry Springer Fight” debuted on NBC. His original film quickly became a hit, attracting millions of viewers. The popularity of the format resulted not only from the topics it covered, based on controversy and negative emotions, but also from the scandals that occurred on TV. he deliberately provoked his interlocutors, which often resulted not only in arguments, but even fights, in which security often had to intervene. Ultimately, 27 seasons were produced and in 2018 the program was taken off the air after one of the participants took his own life.

After the scandal, Springer partially withdrew from public life. From time to time he gave interviews and appeared on television programs, but he did not stay in any of them permanently. In the second half of 2022, doctors diagnosed him with pancreatic cancer, which completely excluded him from his professional life. Despite treatment, he failed to overcome the disease. Jerry Springer died on April 27, 2023. He was 79 years old at the time of his death.
