Of course, Anna Dymna does not play the granddaughter of Kargul and Pawlak in the production directed by Artur Żmijewski, but a completely different role. The film tells the story of the youth of these two people from the borderlands. How did the actress join the cast of “Sami swoi. The Beginning”?
– I read the script. It was based on the novel by Andrzej Mularczyk, screenwriter of the “Sami swoi” trilogy. So this is not a foreign story written by someone who did not know the Karguls and Pawlaks, but created them himself. I was offered an episode – Uncle Pecynichy. I thought, maybe someone will suddenly notice and say: “Look, this Ania Pawlaczka from years ago looks a lot like the old Pecynicha.” It’ll be funny. It’s worth playing just for this moment, explains the actress.

Anna Dymna: Hańcza and Kowalski were like fire and water. It talks about their rivalry with coffee in the main role
Ania Pawlaczka was Dymna’s first role after graduating from college – she appeared on the set of “Nie ma Mocych” in 1973, and then she played in “Kochaj albo łości”. Today, the actress recalls that Władysław Hańcza (film’s Władysław Kargul) and Wacław Kowalski (Kazimierz Pawlak) were like fire and water. He says that Kowalski was everywhere, he fought for everything, for props, for every word, he was in constant motion, not only on the set. – He made wine, honey and cheese at home. He had an apiary, goats. And Hańcza was a lady. He taught me about life, what you need to develop in yourself to be a happy film actress – above all, how to wait, be nice, and not enter into conflicts – says Dymna.
On the occasion of the promotion of “Sami swoi. Popocztek”, the actress also told an anecdote that was very reminiscent of the relationships between Kargul and Pawlak with her granddaughter in the films. – I once bought my grandfather Kowalski an alcohol meter in Krakow because he didn’t have one. He was so moved that he bought me a candy bar in a buffet in Wrocław. And everyone said: “Jesus Maria, listen, something happened, Kowalski bought Ania a chocolate.” So, the next day, Hańcza brought me the largest chocolate with nuts from the pewex store. When Kowalski saw this, he was furious, so he invited me to the buffet and bought me a coffee. In response, Hańcza bought me a large jar of instant coffee – my first one ever! I had it at home for several dozen years. I didn’t drink because it was a relic. In 1973, having instant coffee was something! This competition was wonderful. And working alongside such actors, under the guidance of beloved Sylwester Chęciński, is a unique happiness for a novice actress – she says.
In the United States, he and Hańcza saved half of their wages and went crazy for half of it
The actress also has fond memories of working on the set in the United States, where scenes for “Love or Leave” were shot:
We also went to the United States and I saw a world we didn’t know. We had $10 a day. Hańcza and I decided to save five to survive the next year, and to go crazy in five. We bought all kinds of ice cream, we ate all kinds of fruit, even if we didn’t know what they were. We spent this money on films banned in Poland.
She admits that thanks to the films in which she has starred over decades of her career, she encounters various – sometimes very funny – situations. – Such time travel is wonderful and rare for many people. I do it often, says Dymna. – Sometimes it’s emotional, sometimes it’s confusing. My films from my youth are still repeated: “The Quack”, “Janosik”, “Nie ma Mocych”, “Love or Dump”, “The Leper”. They have been following me like faithful, beloved dogs for decades. From the reactions of people on the street I know when the replays took place. When I hear: “Jesus Maria, Mrs. Dymna, what a mess you are!”, it means that last night I was several dozen years younger and the poor viewer just got a shock. I have a distance from this and I walk boldly among people – emphasizes the actress and talks about one of her unusual experiences:
Sometimes I still receive letters from young men: ‘Ania, I saw you yesterday in Trędowowata<<. Could you go on a date with me?' I once wrote back that, unfortunately, he was a little late because I could be his grandmother. He quickly replied: 'It's a pity, but maybe you have a granddaughter similar to yourself.'

You will be able to see Anna Dymna in the role of Ania Pawlaczka’s great-grandmother for a few minutes on the screen, but this episodic role can also be a pleasant time spent at the cinema for fans of the actress and Sylwester Chęciński’s films. – My uncle Pecynicha is not leaving Krużewniki with the Pawlak family for the Recovered Territories. My husband dies and I stay in the Borderlands. When saying goodbye to Kazimierz Pawlak, I say: “I will look after the graves here, and you go there, because you have important things to do,” reveals the actress. – I know many such families. My family is also from the East. Many Poles stayed in the East because that was where the graves of their loved ones were. Their fates were different later. And others went to Poland to regain the Recovered Territories and populate them. So it is a symbolic figure representing those Poles who stayed in their lands, which were no longer Polish – emphasizes Dymna.
