Basque cinema resists the avalanche of “The Snow Society”
Euskaraz irakurri: Euskal zinemak eutsi egin dio “The Snow Society”ren elausoari
The Snow Societya film directed by JA Bayona, has been the true dominator of the 38th edition of the Goya Awards of the Spanish Film Academy with 12 awards, including those for best film and best direction.
The film, produced by Netflix, narrates the real plane accident that occurred in 1972 in the Andes, and the adventures experienced by the survivors of the accident.
Basque cinema, for its part, has acquired a total of eight awards. Three of them (best original script and novel direction for Estibaliz Urresola and best supporting actress for Ane Gabarain) have gone to 20,000 species of beestwo (best animated film and best adapted screenplay) for Robot dreams, and they have won a prize Close the eyes (best supporting actor for Jose Coronado), To bird or not to bird (best animated short film) and Or how (best new actress for Janet Novás).
The first prize of the night went, precisely, to the actor Jose Coronado for his work in Close the eyes, a film directed by maestro Víctor Erice in which EITB participates, in the category of best supporting actor. However, the film, which marks Erice’s return to feature film after thirty years, has not endorsed this good start during tonight’s gala, since it has only won one award despite being nominated in eleven categories.

There has not been such luck with the following categories, and the awards for best original song (“I only want love” from the film I’m loving you madly), best costume design (The Snow Society), better special effects (The Snow Society), best makeup and hair (The Snow Society) and best revelation actor (Matías Recalt for The Snow Society) could not have been for the Basque candidates.
Bayona’s film has reached cruising speed in this first part of the gala, and has ruthlessly accumulated awards also in the categories of best editing, photography, sound, artistic direction, production direction and original music.
The Snow Society has been proclaimed winner in ten of the first twelve categories of the night. Incredible!
Awards for Basque animation
The hegemony of Bayona’s film has been hopelessly broken in the next category, not in vain it was the best animated film. Basque cinema has taken advantage of the gap, and Robot dreamsby Bilbao director Pablo Berger, has been proclaimed the winner in that category.

Before beginning his journey towards the Oscars (Robot Dreams is nominated for best animated film at the Hollywood Academy Awards), Berger has thanked the public and the cinemas that have shown the film since its premiere last December.
The adaptation of Sara Varon’s graphic novel for the film has also earned Berger, who declared when collecting the “more screenwriter than director” award, the award for best adapted screenplay.
To bird or not to bird, animated short film co-produced by the Bilbao production company Uniko, has reaffirmed with the award in its corresponding section the good moment of Basque animation.
First prize of the night for 20,000 species of bees
The good wave of Basque cinema has been rounded off below by Estibaliz Urresolawhich won the award for best new director for 20,000 species of bees.
The Laudioarra director thanked all the people involved in the production of the film on stage, and denounced the genocide that is being perpetrated in Gaza.
Urresola returned to the stage later to receive the award for best original screenplay for writing 20,000 species of bees.
The film that won the Golden Shell in the past Zinemaldia, Or howdirected by Jaione Camborda from San Sebastián, has given the award for best new actress to its protagonist Janet Novaswho picked up the bust of Goya, giving thanks in Galician and Spanish, visibly moved.

Sofia Otero, protagonist of 20,000 species of bees and winner of the Silver Bear for best performance at the Berlinale (she was not eligible for any Goya because she was under 16 years old), she was in charge of presenting the award for best supporting actress to her film partner Ane Gabarain.
The actress from Gipuzkoa congratulated her fellow nominees, Ana Torrent, Itziar Lazkano, Clara Segura and Luisa Gavasa, “all wonderful mature women”, and thanked the entire hive of 20,000 species of bees and especially to Estibaliz Urresola, “the queen bee”, for giving him this “so special and endearing” character. He has also remembered his family, whom he has had to “relieve my torments.”
Gabarain also mentioned trans people in his speech: “Getting closer to that fight has made me a better person. Long live diversity!” he concluded.
“You are not alone”
The gala, which lasted more than three and a half hours, served as a loudspeaker to show rejection of sexual violence and allusions to feminism, war and the threat it poses could also be heard in the speeches of the award winners and presenters. for culture, the access of the extreme right to institutions.
The Navarrese musician Amaia was in charge of opening the gala with a piano and voice version of the song “Mi gran noche”. Next, the presenters of the gala, the filmmaker couple Los Javis (Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi) and the singer and actress Ana Belén, have condemned from the beginning all the abuses and sexual violence that occur in the cinema, and have urged the industry to review the structures that enable them. “You are not alone,” they have told the victims of abuse. “In the cinema, it’s also over.”
