Yesterday I visited my sister Sandra, who recently became a mother. I don’t have children yet, but I think that will change in the coming years. However, I would not like to repeat the pattern that Sandra has already fallen into.
Perfect families? I want to laugh
Both my sister and I experienced childhood in the 1990s. There were no social media and occasional photo sessions back then. Besides, our parents didn’t focus all their attention only on us. They had their jobs and friends. Nobody made a big deal about parenting. And guess what? I think they were happier than modern parents.
First of all, they did not try at all costs to fit into the pattern of “ideal parenting”. Now when I see all these aesthetic photo sessions with newborns, I want to laugh. I know this isn’t what real life is like! A mother just after giving birth may be exhausted and not yet accustomed to the new situation. Additionally, many women struggle with postpartum depression.
During my visit, Sandra was preparing for this perfect photo session with her son and husband. I was surprised that she decided to do it a week after giving birth. When I saw the effect, I was embarrassed. Aesthetic, beautiful photos with a picture of a perfect family.
It’s making your life harder
The day before my visit, I talked to my sister. She said she felt terrible after giving birth and was in bad mental shape. Moreover, her husband does not help her in everything as she would like. And such emotions are normal. So I don’t understand why the next day we should present ourselves as a perfect family on social media. This is absurd!
If me and my partner become parents, I would not like to enter into this “perfect family” pattern. I won’t do any photo shoots, nor will I post our sweet photos on Facebook or Instagram. In my opinion, striving for a perfect image is simply making your life more difficult. I definitely prefer to be a “90s parent”.
