Vines should be pruned several times a year, the first of which is the so-called spring pruning. The best time to do it is at the turn of February and March, when we are no longer threatened by heavy frosts. A sudden drop would threaten the plant with frost, so on the one hand there is no point in rushing, but on the other it is also better not to wait too long. Otherwise, it will not have time to regenerate, which will result in poor harvests. In addition, do not cut the vine from April to mid-May, because then it releases a lot of juice. Shortening it during this period could even damage it.
How to prune grapes in spring? Remember the slant
Spring pruning of vines is fast approaching, so it is worth preparing for it now. It’s best to start by buying a decent pruner, and don’t forget to disinfect it before using it. Only then should you start working with the tool prepared in this way. Importantly, the plant likes a specific, radical cut, so don’t be afraid to shorten it too much. Just remember to cut the branches at a slight angle, approx. 2-3 cm above the node. This action will prevent the sap from flooding the shoots and the wound will heal faster. However, try to make it as small as possible and secure it well at the end. Properly carried out pruning will make the plant grow more intensively, many new shoots will appear, and there will be plenty of them during the season. Another cut, i.e. the so-called rejuvenating, should be performed in the second half of May.
