When asked when Giżowska will write down her memories in the form of an autobiography or tell about her life to someone who will create a coherent story from individual stories, Giżowska answers briefly – “There is nothing to write about.” However, anyone who has followed the artist’s career at least a little and knows her songs such as “I survived so many years with you”, “Golden wedding rings” or “On the way to Fontaibleau” knows that this is not true.
Krystyna Giżowska never liked festivals: These performances always cost me a lot of health
She started her professional career in the 1970s. Then she took part in the International Song Festival in Sochi. She was very successful in singing competitions, but years later she admitted in interviews that she did not like them. “I didn’t like the atmosphere of festival competition. However, when I started, every young artist had to somehow prove that he was worthy of the attention of composers and cultural animators, and festivals were a good way,” she said about her debut in an interview with “Życie na hot”. “These performances have always cost me a lot of health,” she added.
Despite this, Giżowska remembers her youth very well. “Back then, there was a really strong amateur movement in which I participated. I undertook various beautiful projects with cultural centers, including going to art workshops. There were a lot of things happening that interested me. I had been living with music since I was a child, which may sound trivial because every artist says so, but the fact is that I love it and I still do it with passion. Back then, I wasn’t interested in politics, I wanted to sing, I wanted to perform, I wanted to learn, I had friends, I had fun like any young person. Usually with Over the years, you remember your youth well and I feel the same way. Besides, I grew up in a small town where life is completely different than in big cities,” said the artist in an interview with Plejada.
When asked about censorship problems that so many Polish artists had in the Polish People’s Republic, the singer emphasized that she didn’t have to worry about it. “It didn’t concern me, because this problem was faced by writers and songwriters who had to change the lyrics because they were, for example, politically incorrect. I was a singer, so I usually received the lyrics after censorship, although I know there were problems with it,” she admitted. .
It was a breakthrough in Giżowska’s career. The song was initially supposed to be sung by Urszula
The breakthrough in the singer’s career was the song “You weren’t there for so many years”. The song was written for Urszula, but it was Giżowska who ultimately had a great hit and was invited to the festival in Sopot thanks to it. Listeners loved the song mainly because of its lyrics. “At the beginning, I was annoyed by the fact that people wanted to listen primarily to this song, and I had recorded so many other interesting songs,” Viva quotes Giżowska’s words.
The artist did not reveal the identity of her first husband, but in the early 1980s she moved from Gdynia to Warsaw, where she met her second love – Wojciech Olejnik, a sound engineer for artists such as Budka Suflera. It was a great feeling, but also a very creative relationship. “We are a married couple, but we also work together. Wojtek plays drums, helps with sound production. We spend a lot of time together, at concerts, on tour. We don’t have time to miss each other. And there is never a shortage of reasons for tensions. And I admit that We had very difficult situations, so everything could have ended badly. But we succeeded,” Giżowska said about her relationship with her second husband.
“I have lived with you for so many years.” Giżowska’s great hit contained prophetic lines
The artist’s beloved wanted to maintain her popularity, and that’s how the song “I survived with you so many years” was created in 1987, with music written by Olejnik’s friend – Wojciech Parzyński, and lyrics by Andrzej Sobczak. Giżowska sang the lines: “That someone from years ago won’t knock on my door”, not knowing that after some time she would return to the song with great pain. Giżowska’s husband died on November 1, 2021 at the age of 74. It was a huge blow for the singer, especially since no one expected such a turn of events.
“If someone is sick for a long time, their loved ones gradually get used to the thought that their life is coming to an end. My husband’s death was sudden. That evening, he went shopping and with his dog. And in the morning I woke up, went downstairs, and he was dead. It was a huge shock for me. Suddenly the world stopped for me. I had to build my whole life anew and take care of things that were previously my husband’s domain,” Giżowska said in an interview with “Twój Imperium”.
In an interview with “Fakt”, the singer admitted that time did not heal her wounds. “I miss my husband very much. He was the love of my life. His death was a huge blow. It came like a bolt from the blue. Fortunately, I have a job, thanks to which I don’t remember and think about it,” she said. However, the artist did not break down and appreciates the beautiful memories and emphasizes at every step that Olejnik was her greatest support.
He knew more about her than anyone. The couple was united not only by love, but also by unbreakable friendship and respect. When Giżowska got cancer, she didn’t even inform her son about it. Only the husband knew. “I felt a lump myself when I was examining myself at home. I had a mammogram, which showed nothing. It was a dozen or so years ago, so maybe mammograms were not so accurate. However, I insisted that I wanted to have an ultrasound because I like to get things done before end. And they found a tumor. I underwent surgery, my breast and my life were saved. But it was not my only surgery. Once I started to swell, my lower abdomen hurt, so I went to my gynecologist, and she sent me to the hospital. I told the doctors: “Remove everything , and even with a spare, if necessary. It turned out that it was necessary. Because later there would be no rescue,” she said in an interview with Interia.
