The earthquake that hit the west coast of the United States near Los Angeles was neither the largest nor the most dangerous. It lasted only five seconds and did no more damage than overturned glasses – it had a power of 4.6 on the Richter Scale. This rare sight was captured on camera in the Fox Sports 1 studio, where a conversation about the upcoming Super Bowl was taking place.
Earthquake during live broadcast
In the middle of the conversation, suddenly the entire studio began to vibrate alarmingly. The guests invited to the conversation fell silent, unsure of what was happening, and the journalist said to them and the viewers in a completely composed tone:
There’s an earthquake right now, yes, that’s an earthquake, that’s what’s happening, said Joy Taylor with a smile, and then calmly returned to the conversation with the athletes.
A video of this situation was posted on the Internet by her studiomate, Emmanuel Acho. He didn’t let the guests speak for a moment as he tried to explain to the audience more broadly what the earthquake looked like from his perspective:
Literally, the lights started shaking, the whole stage started shaking, the camera was shaking. It was unclear what was happening, he said.
He added on social media that he had no idea how his friend managed to keep her cool – it was clear from the guests that they were (to put it mildly) concerned.
Importantly, the reaction of the host and guests was far from exemplary. Not every earthquake is dangerous, but until the current one ends, you should simply protect yourself – preferably hide under the table, protecting your head and neck. As you can see, this was not thought about at all – unlike the situation that was immortalized in 2014 in the KTLA 5 studio. As soon as they felt the first tremors, the journalists running the morning newscast dived under the table just in case.
