During his 60-year career, Roman Polañski created many excellent titles that placed him among the most outstanding directors in the world. He made his debut in 1962 with a psychological film, and then created three European productions, after the premiere of which he moved to the USA, where he began a fruitful career in Hollywood.
Polanski gained international popularity. Scandals ruined his reputation
The artistic achievements abound in many productions that today have cult status. The breakthrough in his career was undoubtedly the horror film “Rosemary’s Baby” with Mia Farrow in the main role, which won him an Oscar and a Golden Globe and is today considered a classic of this genre. An equally great success was the melodrama “Tess”, which won three awards from the American Film Academy, as well as the war drama “The Pianist”, which received the same number of statuettes.
And although his films are still appreciated in the community, numerous scandals have negatively affected his reputation. Already in 1977, Polañski received as many as six charges after he was accused of having sex with then 13-year-old Samantha Geimer. He decided to enter into a plea agreement in which he admitted to having unlawful intercourse, for which he was to be sent to prison (42 days of detention were planned to be included in the sentence) and placed under the supervision of a probation officer. For fear that the jury would change its mind, he decided to leave the United States, so the case ultimately did not reach its conclusion.
“The Palace” turned out to be a failure. Now Polanski starts working on a new film
France turned out to be a safe haven for him, as he obtained citizenship and settled there permanently to pursue his further professional plans. For a long time his position seemed unshakable and almost every subsequent title was rewarded with a Caesar. However, the situation changed when, over the years, stories of other women began to come to light and they also accused him of numerous abuses. The change in mood in the country on the Seine is evidenced by, among others, reaction to the comedy, which premiered in 2023 and was not appreciated by critics and viewers.
Despite the setbacks, Polanski still consistently focuses on his work. Although he will celebrate his 91st birthday in 2024, he does not intend to slow down his professional pace. According to the website, film historian Joseph McBride announced on his social media that the director is shooting for a new production. The information is apparently also confirmed by his agent, who, however, did not want to reveal details, explaining that the project is only in the initial phase.
