A patch or piece of opaque tape stuck over the camera eye of a laptop or tablet is a common sight. Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) conducted a study in which not only the camera is important. They have yet another way to spy on their victims.

We tape cameras to protect ourselves from voyeurs, but does this make sense? New Windows or macOS systems are much better secured than they used to be. The camera is treated as one of the permissions and must ask for permission to record the image. However, they have their own ways to bypass security measures. Researchers from MIT do not question the point of taping the camera’s eye, but they draw attention to another thing. Simply applying tape or a patch does not give us 100% protection. Why? The lighting sensor is equally important.

Modern laptops are equipped with lighting sensors that adjust the screen and camera sensors to the conditions. So, for example, if it is too dark, they brighten the image. Scientists performed a test on a Samsung tablet that had just such a sensor and taped the camera to the device. The results are truly disturbing. It turned out that the tablet had adjusted its parameters so that despite the patch on the camera’s eye, it was still visible what the user was doing, what data he was entering and what gestures he was making. Therefore, if we cover the camera, for our own safety, it is worth doing the same with the sensor located right next to the eye.
