Critics delighted with the new cinematic biography. The Pole played the main character’s mother

Foreign critics were delighted with the film “Priscilla” about the wife of pop culture icon Elvis Presley, Priscilla Beaulieu Presley. A Polish woman played an important role in the production, as the main character’s mother.

On February 9, the film “”, a biographical film about the wife of the King of Rock’n’Roll, Elvis Presley, will be released in Polish cinemas. Sofia Coppola, known for “Lost in Translation” and “Marie Antoinette”, is responsible for directing and scripting the work. She made her debut on the big screen when she was only a year old. She then starred in her father’s cult film – “The Godfather” from 1972 (she also appeared in the third part, from 1990, and her acting was widely criticized).

Coppola’s “Priscilla” delighted critics. The Pole played the heroine’s mother

In the title role in the film “Priscilla” we will see Cailee Spaeny, known for her roles in “Bad Times at the El Royale”, “Mare of Easttown” and “Witch School: Legacy”. The great star Elvis Presley will be played by Jacob Eldori, in demand after his famous role in ‘Euphoria’. Interestingly, a Pole also appears alongside the Hollywood stars. Dagmara Domińczyk plays the role of Priscilla’s mother, Ann Beaulieu.

This is not the first high-profile foreign role of the Polish actress. A year ago, a Pole living permanently in the USA, starred in the award-winning series “Succession”. The 47-year-old Pole’s filmography also includes the film “The Daughter” with Olivia Colman and Paul Mescal, “The Immigrant” with Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard, and the mini-series “The City is Ours”, in which Jon Bernthal, the series’ Punisher, played.

“Coppola is a very empathetic observer”

“Priscilla” is doing very well in the ratings of foreign viewers and critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, reviewers gave the film a rating of 84% on the freshness scale. Viewers were a bit more rugged, with an average rating of 63%. “Sofia Coppola has a talent for capturing the interior of her young heroines,” appreciates the painting by Wenlei Ma from PerthNow. “Coppola gives viewers space to ask themselves what this girl’s life would have been like had she not married the 20th century pop culture icon,” adds Stephen Romei of The Australian.

The words of Wendy Ide from the Times and Observer editorial offices are a great compliment to the director. “Coppola is not pushy, her ego never destroys history, but she is a very empathetic observer,” writes the journalist. The production divided Polish critics. “Just focusing on a person other than the star is gold. Coppola allows a mature change of perspective to do the job, adding only whims and textures,” says Jakub Dębski from Kinowy Ekspres. In turn, the editor-in-chief of Filmweb, Łukasz Muszyński, writes about “Priscilla”: A film in which the heroine’s dresses are more important than herself. Equal parts pleasing to the eye and boring.
