Allotment gardens, colloquially and jokingly called “Rhodes” (from “Family Allotment Garden Enclosed by a Wire Mesh”), were once the object of slight ridicule, but today they are undergoing a real renaissance. In larger cities, prices can soar to astronomical amounts, even several dozen thousand zlotys. On the plot you can relax and unwind surrounded by nature, but for many people it is a great opportunity to start an adventure with growing plants, including fruit and vegetables. However, not everything can be planted on . Check what penalties you may face for sowing or planting something contrary to the regulations and the law.
What is not allowed on the ROD plot? The law prohibits this
ROD consists of parts of plots designated for allotment holders and common areas separated in a specific area. Any adult person who has signed a lease agreement with the ROD management can become a plot holder. The use of a plot involves fees, but this is not the only obligation that allotment owners should remember. living on the ROD plot is prohibited. It is also prohibited to place free-standing toilets there and build houses with an area larger than 35 square meters. It is also prohibited to conduct business or commercial activities on the plot.
What cannot be planted on ROD? Forget about “neighbor’s revenge”
Rules and restrictions also apply to cultivation. Contrary to appearances, you cannot grow everything you want on your plot. It is not allowed to plant or sow plants whose cultivation is inconsistent with Polish law. We are talking here primarily about poppy seeds, but also hemp. It is prohibited to sow invasive plants such as milkweed and glandular Christmas tree, which cannot be cultivated without a permit. Plants that are not prohibited may also be problematic, but they quickly become troublesome and grow excessively. This includes: “neighbor’s revenge”, i.e. vinegar sumac, but also goldenrod and lobed leafwort.

Not just forbidden plants. Check where you can plant trees and shrubs on your plot
You also cannot designate the plot for “homogeneous production cultivation”, i.e. plant one plant, e.g. potatoes, on the entire plot. If you plan to plant trees, e.g. fruit trees, make sure what distances from the plot boundary are allowed by the regulations of your ROD. Examples include cherries and walnuts, which you can plant at least 5 meters from the border. Ornamental trees should be of low-growing species and should not exceed 3 meters in height. In turn, fruit trees should not be planted at a distance closer than 1 meter from the plot boundary.
What are the penalties for breaking the rules? If you plant plants banned in Poland, you may be exposed to serious legal problems. Breaking the rules, in turn, may not only expose you to the anger of your neighbors. The offense is punishable by a fine. The ROD Management Board may terminate the lease agreement or take all possible actions to restore the “condition consistent with the regulations”. This means, for example, getting rid of plants planted in violation of the regulations.
