Arkadiusz Jakubik was 8 years old when he made his acting debut. “I hated this movie for a long time”

Today, Arkadiusz Jakubik is among the best Polish actors, but few people know that he appeared in front of the camera for the first time when he was still a child. Although his debut role opened the door to a great career, for a long time he associated it only with traumatic experiences.

Although many associate him with the role of the not-so-smart aspirant Ryś from the series, Arkadiusz Jakubik has many more cult titles to his credit, such as “Drogówka”, “Wesele”, “Paradox” and “Clergy”. He developed his skills and talent at the Wrocław branch of the State Drama School in Krakow, graduating in 1992. Few know that his adventure with the camera began 15 years earlier.

He was 8 years old when he made his debut alongside Franciszek Pieczka. The film’s success did not make him proud at all

In November 1977, a poetic film for children and teenagers, “Round Week”, directed by Tadeusz Kijański and written by Albin Siekierski, was released in cinemas across Poland. It was in it that Arkadiusz Jakubik played his first role. He then played the role of the main character, Gustlik. His partners included, among others: outstanding, playing his grandfather, and legendary as his mother.

The film’s premiere attracted an audience of millions, making it a huge box office success. The debuting 8-year-old was loved not only by viewers, but also by critics, who predicted a spectacular career for him and in their reviews hailed him as the future of Polish cinema. For him, however, the production did not seem to be a success or a springboard to fame, and for a long time he assessed it only through the prism of the experiences he had to face on the set.

Arkadiusz Jakubik was ashamed of his debut role for years. What was the reason?

He particularly remembers the scene in which he stands in full negligee in front of the camera and his mother washes him in a tub of water. In an interview for “Gazeta Wyborcza” in 2013, he admitted that shooting this shot was a real trauma for him. The thought that millions of viewers had seen him dressed as Adam filled him with unimaginable shame. Whenever someone mentioned that they had watched “Round Week”, they immediately felt embarrassed and did everything to change the subject as quickly as possible. – I hated this film for a long time, I was ashamed, especially this scene, my first nude scene – .

His parents, however, had a completely different attitude towards it. The actor’s mother was especially proud and eager to tell everyone about her son’s success. When the premiere date of the production was announced at the Pionier cinema in Strzelce Opolskie, she decided to invite all his friends from school number 2, which he attended at the time, to the screening, which he was not the least bit thrilled about. – My mother didn’t understand at all that I didn’t want to watch this film, especially with my new classmates, he said. The peers showed no mercy and there was no end to their malicious comments right after leaving the room. – I was running around the Strzelce park, crying, repeating to myself like a mantra: “I hate actors, I will never be an actor,” he said. Only after many years did he gain more distance from this role and today he returns to it much more willingly in conversations.
