For many people, transplanting plants, including orchids, may seem a bit complicated. However, it turns out that there is nothing difficult in the action. Check when to repot an orchid and how to do it exactly, and you won’t make a mistake. The plant will develop beautifully and delight household members and guests.
When to transplant an orchid into a larger pot? Can orchids be repotted while they are blooming?
Generally speaking, repotting should take place every three years or so. Thanks to this, the plants will develop well and delight. Still, it’s worth keeping in mind that sometimes replanting should be done right away – especially when you notice it mold in the pot, other unusual growth or pests. It is also necessary to replant an orchid whose roots no longer fit in the pot. The best time for such activities is early spring, when the plant is not yet blooming. It is better not to do this during flowering, and if you have to, you will need to prune the flowers and buds.
How to repot an orchid? It’s simpler than it seems
If you want to replant the orchid, first gently remove it from its current location. You can water it in advance and the task will be a bit easier. Gently press the roots to loosen them from the pot, and if that doesn’t work, just cut them open. After removing the orchid, clean the roots and use pruners to remove any damaged or rotten ones. Place the plant in a substrate made of bark, peat and expanded clay (a ready-made substrate for orchids will work). Be careful not to damage the roots, and then gently cover the top with another layer of substrate. It is good if the pot is transparent. Thanks to this, the light will have no problem reaching the roots, and the orchid will develop even better.
