“Slave Isaura” – in the 1980s, there was probably no Pole who did not recognize this Brazilian soap opera. “Isaura the Slave” gained incredible popularity in Poland and was the first soap opera shown in our country. The production was hailed as the most popular in the history of Polish television. Episodes were broadcast on Tuesday evenings. The series’ viewership reached an average of 81 percent, and at times even fluctuated around 90 percent. Poles could watch the first episode on Polish Television in 1985. The series was broadcast in a total of 130 countries. The role of the titular Isaura was played by actress Lucélia Santos.
Production in the mid-1980s caused a huge emotional stir. It was even considered that the series’ impact on people had the hallmarks of a sociological phenomenon. When the next episode was shown on Tuesday evening, the streets were literally empty – as people gathered in front of the TV sets.
On the wave of this popularity, the pair of main actors visited Poland in May 1985. During their week-long stay, they visited Warsaw, Łódź, Skierniewice, Katowice, Sosnowiec and Kraków. They visited, among others: schools, hospitals and workplaces.

Let us recall the plot of the soap opera “Isaura the Slave”. The action takes place in Brazil in the 19th century, during the reign of Emperor Pedro II, several years before the abolition of slavery in 1888. The titular slave, Isaura, works at home. Due to her light skin color, she avoided a difficult fate on the plantation. She is taught foreign languages, singing, dancing and playing the piano. She falls in love with Tobias, who is the heir to a neighboring plantation. However, the lovers cannot be together because a certain heir Leoncio wants to prevent them from doing so, who wants to seduce the titular Isaura.
