The revolution in public media involves many challenges for the new authorities. One of the biggest is the attempt to rebuild the image of Telewizja Polska. For this purpose, the main news program “Wiadomości” replaced the “19.30” format, which from the very beginning encountered major problems in implementation.
Another failure on TVP. There was a “geographical” error in the material
Staff shortages and broadcasting from a studio that was not adapted to the needs of journalists and producers are just the tip of the iceberg. The new staff is learning to work together and is also looking for a form of communication that is suitable for viewers. It is worth recalling here that public media should be guided by their mission when preparing materials – not their own needs, as is the case with private broadcasters.
Haste and stress are poor advisors, which is especially visible in TV programs where mistakes abound. Mistakes also occur in the new program, with two errors recently appearing in the “19.30” program. On Tuesday, information was broadcast that Zamość is a city with a population of several thousand, which was quickly corrected by viewers in online comments. According to the Central Statistical Office’s research from 2022, Zamość has almost 59,000 inhabitants.
Viewers mock the mistake in “7.30”. There was also a strong counterargument
A day later, TVP broadcast material about the American pilot Amelia Earhart, who was the first to fly over the Atlantic Ocean as a passenger, and then repeated the feat herself. The woman disappeared in 1937 over the Pacific Ocean. The case has not been resolved to this day, but researchers recently discovered the wreck of the plane flown by the famous pilot.
To better illustrate Earhart’s flight route, TVP presented a map with the most important points regarding the missing woman’s flight marked. There was an error among the signatures. Papua New Guinea – the second largest country in Oceania, signed as “Papula”.
The graphic was shared on Facebook by the fanpage “I watch ‘Wiadomości’ because I can’t afford stimulants”, and the commenters were merciless towards the station. “Papuła – New Guinea is somewhere near Ałstralia” – TVP viewers mocked. One commenter noted, however, that while mistakes shouldn’t happen, he prefers typos to the abuses of previous journalists. “On the one hand, an error should not appear in a national news service, on the other hand, I prefer that elements such as typos arouse concern on public television. And only such,” one of the statements said.
