Chargers sit in sockets all the time. Meanwhile, even when not in use, they consume electricity

At night we charge the phone, in the morning we disconnect the cable and go to work. The charger remains in the socket unused until the evening when we connect the device to it again. Many people know this scenario. Well, who wants to unplug it every time? And the more economical ones. But does it make sense?

Today, there is virtually no home without at least one charger or power supply. They are usually connected all the time – even when we are not using them. Does this make our money slip through our fingers?

Chargers caused short circuits

The chargers and power supplies we used to use were prone to getting hot or even overheating. It often resulted in a short circuit and the corks breaking, and in extreme cases even a fire. Therefore, many people have developed the habit of always unplugging them from the power source when they are not using them. Some people still do this because they believe that in this way they save both nerves and money.

Yes, chargers produced today can consume electricity even when no device is connected to them. However, this consumption is very low (maximum 0.5 W). This results from EU regulations that are intended to prevent the situations described above. If our charger overheats, this is a reason to contact the store or manufacturer with a complaint.

Should we disconnect the charger when we are not using it?

If we have one or two chargers or power supplies at home that are permanently connected to electricity, we probably won’t go bankrupt. According to calculations, this cost should not exceed PLN 2 per year. It’s worse when we use electrical sockets too much. A TV, computer, router or printer are usually constantly connected to the power supply. Let’s add a few phones and other devices that we charge several times a day, and 2 zlotys can make a little more.

It’s still not going to be a huge amount of money (unless the devices are damaged), but it may be worth considering disconnecting them from the sockets if we don’t use them – e.g. at night or during trips. This will allow us to save some money and at the same time shake hands with ecologists. A good solution is to invest in convenient strips with a switch, thanks to which we do not have to dive under desks and behind cabinets to pull out plugs.
