She was the first to break Jeremi Przybora’s heart. He later found out what it means to truly suffer

It was for her that Jeremi Przybora wrote the song “You’re not bathing anymore” when she broke his heart. Barbara Wrzesiñska was the first woman who hurt the artist so much and made him create one of his greatest hits in despair.

He was the walking definition of a gentleman. Handsome, gallant, but also in love with women – and it’s mutual. Jeremi Przybora was a great poet, writer, translator and co-creator of Kabaret Starskich Panów. “He had a bit of an archaic style. He could wear a tuxedo or a swallow jacket. He just had it innate. He liked to have polished, beautifully shiny shoes and a carefully tied tie. He dressed calmly, it was so discreet. Just like that, what Przybora is like,” Juliusz Owidzki said about the artist in a radio broadcast from 1974, quoted by the Onet portal.

Przybora had many women. Barbara Wrzesińska was the first to break his heart

Przybora got married for the first time in 1939. He then married Maria Burska. The marriage lasted until 1958, when he married another woman – radio editor Jadwiga Berens. In his later years he had many women. He met with Maria Koterbska and Krystyna Walczakówna, but it was actress Barbara Wrzesińska who first broke the musician’s heart.

For years, Wrzesińska performed on the stage of Warsaw theaters – Współczesny, National and Ateneum. Her most recognizable appearances were in Olga Lipińska’s TV cabarets. She met Przybora when she was only 21 years old, they talked for the first time on the phone when the artist invited her to take part in a cabaret evening.

“It’s about an episodic role illustrating the lyrics and singing a duet,” he explained to Wrzesińska, but she insisted that she couldn’t sing. As we read in the book by Maria Wilczek-Krupa “Żuan Don. Biografia Jeremi Przybora”, she gave in, but the role turned out to be quite demanding. The actress had to appear in a very skimpy bikini. Not only did the artist have no problem with it, but she also made herself a costume out of… handkerchiefs. The attitude charmed Przybora.

It turned out that when the cameras appeared, Wrzesińska’s self-confidence faded a bit. The actress was shaking from her knees up. “It was touching. You killed me with that flying knee,” Przybora told her on one of their first dates. Wrzesińska was also seduced by the charm of the older man. She wanted to look her best in front of him, which is why she stuffed cotton into her bra to enhance her small breasts. The material moved during the dance, which apparently made Przybora emotional. “Now I have no choice but to fall in love with you,” he said to his chosen one.

Wrzesińska and Przybora’s romance did not last long; it can be assumed that the artists met for less than two years. However, they saw each other almost every day and understood each other very well. One day he admitted that he had cheated on her with Maria Koterbska, then their relationship loosened up a bit. The woman had no time for the poet, she spent all day at the theater, and when she returned home, she lounged in the bathtub and didn’t hear the phone ringing. “Yes, Jeremi. Because I bathe often,” she explained to the artist when he complained about not answering his calls.

It was for her that he wrote his great hit “You’re not bathing anymore.” It was therapy for him

However, Koterbska was not the reason for Wrzesińska and Przybora’s breakup. The actress found out that her beloved was not divorced and that his wife was mentally ill. It was too much for the young girl. She left.

“He experienced it very much and that’s when he wrote the song ‘You’re not bathing anymore'” – says the author of Przybora’s biography, Maria Wilczek-Krupa, in an interview with PAP. “This song amuses us a lot today, but it was born out of the author’s great pain,” he adds. What Przybora himself confirmed in the second volume of “Memoirs” “Among my few texts about serious topics – those related to personal experiences, there are almost none. However, the most painful breakup for me (half a year of suffering) I mourned with the song ‘You’re not bathing anymore’, which I don’t think she made anyone cry.” – he wrote.

“Finally, Przybora managed to get out of the hole, then Osiecka appeared. Only then did he learn what it means to suffer,” notes Maria Wilczek-Krupa, who knew the great poet’s story inside out.
