Natascha Kampusch was kidnapped from a street in Vienna on March 2, 1998 by Wolfgang Priklopil while she was walking to school. Natascha was only 10 years old. This led to one of the largest missing person searches in Austria, but no leads were found. The search for Natascha intensified after reports that she was seen being dragged into a white minivan by two men.
She spent 3,096 days in captivity. Kept in the dark and starved, she never gave up hope of being rescued
In the hidden, windowless basement of Priklopil’s house in Strasshof, a small town northeast of Vienna, Natascha was held captive. There she suffered sexual and physical torture, she was starved and kept in the dark. She was forced to cook and clean for Priklopil as he gradually gave her access to additional rooms in the house. Priklopil claimed that it was his property and work.

After over 8 years of captivity, Natascha managed to escape. However, her nightmare did not end as the public claimed that she was lying
Finally, Priklopil agreed to let Natascha go from the basement to the upstairs and even to the garden. On August 23, 2006, Natascha, who was 18 at the time, was given permission to vacuum her car in the Priklopil family’s driveway. The perpetrator briefly disappeared from view and away from the roar of the vacuum cleaner when he received the call. Natascha took this opportunity to escape, ran to a distant neighbor’s house and introduced herself. Natascha was returned to her family when the police were contacted, but then the nightmare began as many people thought she had made it all up.
She had to learn life in the wild again. People didn’t make it easy for her
Currently, Natascha Kampusch works as an author, TV presenter and activist. She wrote two books about her time in captivity, even though she was initially reluctant to talk about her experiences. Society forced her to do it. Natascha was the only witness to the kidnapping because her captor committed suicide on the day she escaped. Many people called her a fraud and even accused her mother of planning the kidnapping.
