Halina Kunicka became famous in the 1960s with hits such as “Summer, summer, summer waiting”, “Marionetka” and “Białe Zakopane”. In the next decade, she presented listeners with the still immortal “Brass Bands”, without which fans still cannot imagine the artist’s concerts. However, the 1970s were also the time of the film “Nights and Days” for the singer. It was she who promoted the waltz “From Night to Night” and “12 Hours in the Life of a Woman”. In the 1980s, texts for Kunicka were written by, among others, Agnieszka Osiecka and Wojciech Młynarski.
The singer, born in 1938 in Lviv, can boast of success not only in Poland. The artist gave concerts in Europe, but she also had fans in Israel, the USA, Canada and Australia. In total, the singer has sold about a million copies of her albums, several of them have gold status. She was honored with important industry awards and state decorations – the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis.
In 2015, Kunicka’s biography was published, written by the singer together with Kamila Drecka. In “The World Is Not That Bad”, the artist told her story with great sincerity and emotion. “She sang hundreds of songs. She performed on stages where Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich stood. She was friends with the great creators of Polish songs. It was immortalized in a poem by Zbigniew Herbert. “She experienced love until she lost her breath,” we read in the description of the book, which summarizes the years of the singer’s career.
In her biography, Kunicka focused on the truth, she had no intention of whitewashing herself. The book was also an excuse for her to come to terms with the more difficult elements of her past. One of the most moving fragments in the biography is the story of her first marriage, which ended in a broken heart.
Halina Kunicka lived with remorse for years. She broke her first husband’s heart
Kunicka got married for the first time very young, she was only 22 years old. The artist’s partner did not come from the industry, he was a construction engineer and the son of Kunicka’s high school teacher; they met when she was active in the “Pinezka” cabaret. “I was very much in love with Staś… When I was traveling around Poland with performances, I only dreamed of returning to Warsaw. I wanted to see him as soon as possible,” the Super Express website quotes the artist’s memories.
Kunicka and Stanisław’s relationship lasted seven years. The partner supported the artist when her father passed away and took care of her and her mother when they could not afford an apartment. However, the love for her husband died out in Kunicka’s heart when she met Lucjan Kydryński. The artist admitted in her biography that she felt great remorse towards her first husband, whom she cheated on.
“I finally had to say that I was leaving. Staś was certainly very sorry, but he endured it extremely well.” In interviews, the singer emphasized that her husband was a wonderful man and did not deserve the way she treated him. However, it is worth noting that if she had stayed in the relationship, neither of them would have been happy in it.
She left her husband for a married man. True love united them
“I’m all made up of remorse. After the divorce, I lived for a long time with the feeling of guilt that I wasn’t able to ask Staś for forgiveness,” Super Express quotes the artist. However, suffering and heartbreak also affected Kunicka. The love of her life, Lucjan Kydryński, died in 2006. It was a huge blow for the artist. After her partner’s death, the singer lived in “overwhelming despair” for months – we learn from her biography.
“Something happened to us that I would wish for everyone. Meeting another person and another soul, traveling through the world together. When I have to go on stage, I ask Lucjan to be with me. I know that somewhere up there, there is a person close to me, who supports me spiritually. I feel that Lucjan takes care of me,” viva.pl quotes the artist.
