There are several species of hydrangea: garden, bouquet, bush and ball. Our gardens are usually decorated with garden hydrangea, because it is the most popular variety. It blooms from June to September, and its flowers are most often white, pink and blue. Dried inflorescences are also a beautiful decoration in winter. What should be done with them before spring comes?
When to prune hydrangeas after winter? Save the date in your calendar
During frosts, many people wonder what to do with dried hydrangea flowers. Some people decide to cut them off, which is a big mistake. Withered hydrangeas provide natural protection against frost. Garden hydrangea blooms on last year’s shoots, so it cannot be cut. After winter, only hygienic pruning should be carried out, i.e. remove damaged and weak shoots and dried inflorescences. This should be done in early spring, i.e. at the end of March or at the beginning of April. If you prune the plant in the fall, it will lose its buds and will not bloom the following year.
How to cut garden hydrangeas? Remember one thing
Be careful when pruning your garden plant, as incorrect pruning will prevent the plant from flowering. Do not remove branches with flower buds already attached. The flower is very sensitive to frost, so it must be protected during winter to prevent the shoots from freezing. Hydrangea can be covered with agrotextile and mounds made of pine bark or peat. In the case of bouquet, bush and saw hydrangeas, the first cut after winter is also best done in spring, before the first leaves appear. However, nothing will happen to these three species if you cut their shoots in autumn. This will not have much effect on their flowering.
