Editor Mazurek asks about the morning-after pill. “Contraceptive pills yes, energy drinks no”

Editor Robert Mazurek tried to talk to Dariusz Wieczorek from Nowa Lewica on RMF FM regarding access to the morning-after pill. As is his custom, he reduced the matter to absurdity, which surprised the guest.

The new government is trying to reverse the things that the PiS government blocked. This applies not only to changes in the public media or the judiciary, but also to much less complicated things, such as access to emergency contraception, which is not a problem in almost all of Europe. Although there is no exact date yet, when the matter is slowly becoming a fact.

Editor Robert Mazurek talked about this issue on RMF FM radio with MP Dariusz Wieczorek from the New Left. In his own style and quite predictably, he asked whether underage women would now be able to just go and buy the morning-after pill and what was the point of banning them from drinking energy drinks. The guy didn’t really understand the connection between these two issues.

RMF FM. Robert Mazurek asks about the “morning after” pill

Half a year ago, the PiS government, with the support of almost the entire opposition (only Confederation was against), voted to introduce a ban on the sale of energy drinks to persons under 18 years of age. In this situation, drinks were treated on an equal footing with alcohol or cigarettes, and as a result, from January 1 this year, no minor can legally purchase this type of drugs in Poland.

The new government is currently working on new changes to the old law, which prohibited the sale of emergency contraception (the morning-after pill) without a prescription. The obligation to follow the doctor-prescription-pharmacy route was introduced in 2017 by the Minister of Health, Konstanty Radziwiłł, which made Poland a country where it is even more difficult to protect against unwanted pregnancy. Long waits in queues to see doctors condemn women to other attempts to obtain contraceptives, often for much more money and outside the NFZ service package. The opposition also went to the elections under the slogan of changes in this area – a draft bill is already ready, which abolishes the obligation to obtain a prescription for the “morning after” pill – including for people aged 15 and over, because from this age young people can in Poland legally have sex.

In some inexplicable way, the editor on RMF FM radio combined both issues – the ban on the sale of energy drinks and the permission to sell the morning-after pill without a prescription – into one.

This means that you cannot buy energy drinks until you are 18 years old. But now, after the age of 15, you will be able to buy the morning-after pill – he said.

And what does this have to do with anything? – asked the surprised guest.

I’m asking myself, I’m wondering. We live in a country where emergency contraception can be purchased after the age of 15. Everyone can buy an early contraceptive pill, emergency contraception, regardless of gender. But why then do we give minors the right to buy contraception and not allow them to buy energy drinks? – he pressed.

And why do we prohibit minors from buying vodka? Because the energy drink is very similar to such a drink – replied the MP.

Exactly! This is the logic! Don’t you feel a bit absurd about this?

I don’t really understand the editor’s dilemma, according to this logic everything should be allowed, not from the age of 15, but from the age of 10 – countered Wieczorek.

The conversation about the morning-after pill begins around the sixth minute of the recording below:

Meanwhile, horror of horrors!, without a prescription and without having to show your ID card, in a pharmacy you can also buy… potency products that will make your tree branch burn. Which, of course, also has a huge connection with the fact that it is prohibited for minors to buy alcohol, cigarettes, energy drinks and pornography. How could such an oversight have occurred? No doubt the editor of Mazurek will ask his next guest about this, right?
