January is the time of proms for high school graduates and the beginning of intensive study before an important exam. Party outfits and music have changed over the years, but one thing remains the same. Tradition dictates that the event begin with a ceremonial polonaise. However, students and their creative teachers have more and more interesting ideas to modernize their habits a bit.
Techno polonaise at the prom in Płock
An unusual dance at the prom was presented by the Vocational Training Centers in Płock. The school has its own TikTok channel and that’s where you can see how the students distinguished themselves. The recording of this year’s high school prom from Płock is extremely popular, the video has almost 120,000 reactions and has been played almost 2 million times.
The recording begins inconspicuously. We see the first couple, white tablecloths on the tables and dimmed lights, the first bars of a polonaise can be heard in the background. Further events are revealed by slightly pink lighting, which does not quite match the solemn moment.
They replaced traditional dance with techno music. Not everyone liked it
At one point, the DJ announced a special dedication “from Łukasz”, the students relaxed a bit and lost the rhythm of the polonaise, and the music slowly began to change. A traditional melody mixed with a disco beat. “The freaks are coming, they’re coming,” the DJ shouts in the video, and the high school graduates continue the routine. Then techno turns into a traditional polonaise again, and so on.
At the end, the DJ played the song “Rapapara” by Łydka Grubasa. The high school graduates continued dancing, singing the well-known chorus. “Techno polonaise, like every year” – reads the description of the film from Płock. This may mean that mixing polonaise with modern music has become a tradition at school.
However, all commentators did not like this form of polonaise. One commenter admitted that she hoped this dance wasn’t the start of prom. “It hurts to look at it,” “There is no tradition anymore,” wrote others. Some people also didn’t like the fact that some of the high school graduates were wearing sports shoes. Many viewers also admitted that they envied the school’s relaxation, and several comments expressed regret that their authors had to be content with only traditional dancing.
