Parties in the Polish People’s Republic? On the table are corks and bigos. And “when you ran out of alcohol, you ran to the finish line”

Poles have always liked to have fun. We managed to find ways to party a little even when political events and the economic situation were not optimistic. Or maybe especially then. What did it look like in the times of the Polish People’s Republic? Several people, including our readers, told us about balls, parties and dances.

– In the mid-1970s, there was relative “Gierek” prosperity – our interlocutor Sławek told us. – The most common occasion to organize an event was the widely and grandly organized name day. Family and friends usually met in their homes at lavishly laid tables. From time to time, they toasted to the birthday boy’s health and at least once sang the loud “100 years”. Sometimes a tape recorder or gramophone, also known as an adapter, was turned on and – if space allowed – there were even dances. I also remember that my parents went to the New Year’s Eve ball every year and occasionally went to restaurants with friends for dancing evenings.

These words are also confirmed by . As their comments show, even though we didn’t have the facilities we have today, we could still have a lot of fun. Or maybe even better than today.

It was great. All you needed was an adapter and a piece of floor and it was fun.

Parties in those days were great. Everyone had a good time with the orchestra or band.

At 2 a.m. it was safe to go home

– we read.

“Parties, parties, carnival games. You don’t forget that”

– The 1980s, when I was young, were unfortunately a period of permanent shortage of all goods – recalled Sławek. – The most common party was held at the so-called parties held in houses or apartments on some occasion or without. Of course, in the absence of parents.

The challenge was to organize a buffet and the availability of drinks. Food and alcohol were rationed, although sometimes it was possible to buy something snacks without cards, or buy some beer or wine that they “threw” into the store. We managed to cope with it somehow and the parties were usually very successful, despite the lack of fancy snacks and drinks.

– They were accompanied by music from better and better audio equipment, which sometimes was not appreciated by the neighbors – our interlocutor laughed. – There were also disco clubs in Warsaw and the surrounding area, but due to the high attendance, all places were often occupied, and it also involved a lot of expenses.

Our readers are of a similar opinion. They remember events in the times of the Polish People’s Republic with a smile. Yes, you can feel it by reading their statements:

In the 1980s I worked in a pub as a waitress and those were the best years of my life

During the carnival, you always had to go to at least one all-night party.

Was great! Parties, parties, carnival games. This can not be forgotten.

“When you ran out of alcohol, you ran to the so-called finish line”

– Parties were usually held at home on Saturday, because Friday was not the beginning of the weekend then – Gosia told us. – The girls sewed their clothes or bought them at Różyc. Dresses and skirts are a must. Men often wear shirts without a tie or polo shirts and Pewex jeans. Ladies usually wear heavy makeup. All shades of blue, turquoise and purple were fashionable. The more colorful, the better in that gray, sad everyday life with no prospects. There were also themed parties and costume parties. When it comes to food, we made sandwiches, hors d’oeuvres and sometimes something hot, such as bigos.

And of course alcohol. Sometimes a sea of alcohol. Mainly vodka and cheap wines – “jabole”. When we ran out of alcohol, we went to the so-called meta. That is, to places or people illegally selling alcohol. Information about the location of such “entrepreneurs” usually spread by word of mouth. I remember once, my then-un-husband, and a friend of mine brought a bottle from such a drugstore, and after opening it, it turned out that there was water inside. And with sand. Beer was not as popular then as it is today. It wasn’t in stores, only in beer stands

– added our interlocutor.

How do you remember the events of a few decades ago? Have you been spending your time sleeping? How did it look like? We are very curious about your stories.
