The production is inspired by the life of the cunning and ambitious Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most powerful cartels in history. “Blanco had a lethal mix of charm and unexpected fierceness, thanks to which she was able to navigate both family and business matters, earning her the nickname ‘Godmother’,” reads the series description.
What is significant in the case of this topic is that the co-creator of the series is Eric Newman, the showrunner of “Narcos” and “Narcos: Mexico”. All six episodes were directed by Andrés Baiz, who also directed the series with Pedro Pascal. The composition was supposed to be a guarantee of the quality of the new Netflix production.
The day after its premiere, “Griselda” was rated 88 percent fresh by critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while viewers rated the series three percent lower. In turn, on the Polish Filmweb, 141 people have reviewed “Griselda” so far, and the average rating is 6.7 stars.
Spin-off “Narcos” about Griselda Blanco now on Netflix. Opinions are divided
The first opinions of critics about the series have also appeared online. Lucy Mangan from The Guardian rated “Griselda” four out of five stars. The critic praises the series for its different atmosphere and Vergara’s acting than “Narcos”. “A spectacular show,” writes the journalist in the context of the actress. “It’s great to watch,” he sums up.
Tom Gliatto from People also praises Vergara’s game. “Beautifully exotic, like a bird of paradise, she was invaluable in the series and very funny,” writes the journalist. “‘Griselda’ is simply a romantic fantasy with cocaine and corpses in the background,” sums up the critic.
“A fast-paced and well-acted, brutal, fascinating and dramatic series,” writes Aramide Tinubu from Variety. “Despite minor mistakes, the series perfectly portrays a woman who, after a long time as a victim, turned into a predator,” she adds.
Polish reviewers are slightly less understanding of “Griselda”. “A pudding series. They turned one of the most terrifying characters of the drug business into an honest mother who tries to survive in a cruel male world,” writes Łukasz Muszyński from Filmweb. “You can deliver something decent and engaging based on established patterns, provided you play it in a creative way. However, in the case of ‘Griselda’ this did not happen, and what’s worse – the creators squandered the entire potential of this story, significantly making their heroine more polite,” he says.
