The vital and artistic legacy of Néstor Basterretxea, a reason for celebration on the centenary of his birth

More than 20 cultural institutions and entities have come together, coordinated by the Basque Government, to celebrate and promote “the breadth and depth” of the legacy of Nestor Basterretxeaone of the fundamental Basque artists of the 20th century, both from an artistic point of view “and with regard to his social commitment and the validity of his work in the collective imagination of Euskal Herria.”
Next May 6 will mark 100 years since the birth of Néstor Basterretxea (Bermeo, 1924-Hondarribia, 2014), and more than twenty cultural institutions will promote and bring us closer to the work of this great artist in the fields of painting and sculpture. , cinema, illustration, design and the promotion of Basque culture. To this end, exhibitions, audiovisual programs and cultural and editorial activities have been organized for this year 2024 and also for next year.
The program will begin on February 28 with the opening of the exhibition Nestor Basterretxea. Design and architecture at the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao. In April, the Menchu Gal room in Irún will present the exhibition Basterretxea in Irun (1957-1975)focused on his most experimental artistic production.
For its part, starting May 10, the Artium museum will dedicate the exhibition Basterretxea in the archive to delve deeper into his film production from a documentary perspective. Likewise, the important Basque cosmogonic series of the artist can be seen at the Montehermoso Cultural Center in Vitoria-Gasteiz from June 27.
Already in the month of November, the Museum of Art and History of Durango will dedicate the exhibition to him Néstor Basterretxea, graphic designer and illustratorwhile the San Telmo Museum in San Sebastián will present the exhibition Connections of a collection: Néstor Basterretxea and San Telmo Museoa.

Entering 2025, the Museum Cemento Rezola will present an exhibition curated by Miren Vadillo around the figure of the artist. Furthermore, the work and constant relationship of Néstor Basterretxea with cinema and his audiovisual production will be widely studied in the programs organized by the Basque Film Library, the Elías Querejeta Zine-Eskola and the San Sebastián International Festival.
The Punto de Vista Festival of Pamplona and the Jorge Oteiza Museum jointly prepare the audiovisual program Néstor Basterretxea and the imagewhich will be screened at the museum on March 16, while the Tabakalera International Center for Contemporary Culture will screen the artist’s complete filmography in a film series that will take place in the fall.
On the other hand, the Basque Parliament will offer a program of activities throughout 2024 under the title Two emblematic oaks for a centenary: ‘Izaro’ and ‘Tribute to the tree of Gernika’.
Also in autumn, the Elgoibar Machine Tool Museum will promote creative workshops titled Crossed looksas well as the screening and colloquium Operation H. The industry made art in the eyes of Basterretxea.
