On January 17, 2023, the series “American Nightmare” was added to the library, produced by the creators of the hit “Tinder Cheater”, showing the behind-the-scenes of one of the most famous criminal cases from almost a decade ago. The story, which even the police did not believe at first, still arouses controversy and curiosity among people all over the world. And although only a few days have passed since the production’s premiere, it has already placed on the podium of the TOP10 most popular on the platform.
Netflix’s “American Nightmare” is based on facts. The police did not believe that a kidnapping had occurred
To introduce Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn, you have to go back to March 2015. At night, armed burglars broke into the couple’s house, overpowered them, tied them up, then drugged them and locked them in a closet. When the man woke up a few hours later, neither his partner nor his car was there. The kidnappers contacted him almost immediately, demanding PLN 8,500. dollars in ransom, but he delayed reporting the matter to the police for several hours because cameras were installed in his house. Only after losing communication with the kidnappers did he decide to ask for help, presenting the events of the previous night step by step.
Investigators didn’t believe Quinn’s testimony from the beginning, but they took action anyway, and he found himself under suspicion. It was assumed that he had committed the murder of his partner and had invented the whole story to cover up the crime and make it more difficult to solve the mystery. However, there were those who suspected Denise herself of being a hoax, comparing her example to the plot of the hit movie “Gone Girl”. Suddenly, the matter changed course completely. Just before the ransom was handed over, the woman found herself in a town 400 km away from her place of residence. Surveillance cameras even recorded him driving an allegedly stolen car. When she returned home, she was immediately subjected to many hours of interrogation, after which the investigators agreed on one thing… She made it all up.
The unexpected turn of events confused the investigators. The case ended up in court
At some point, the case came to a standstill, and there was no evidence to indict the case. It was then that messages with specific content began to arrive on the virtual e-mail address of one of the investigative journalists who dealt with the case. It quickly turned out that the intended recipient was , but the couple were still the main suspects and it was assumed that in this way they were continuing the game with law enforcement agencies. Other, similar kidnapping cases began to be analyzed, until they finally found a woman who had also been attempted to be kidnapped in another city in California. The suspect, Mathew Muller, was quickly identified, and a search of his home revealed his guilt, as various items were found there, including items stolen from Huskins’ and Quinn’s home.
Ultimately, the man was brought to trial and all the alleged acts were proven, for which he was sentenced to 40 years in prison. However, the couple’s life did not return to normal. Due to the media statements of the investigators, who initially doubted their version of events and accused them of being a hoax, public opinion considered them to be frauds and issued a verdict itself. They decided to fight for their good name in court, but finding the truth took as long as 3 years. Today they try to function as if the past never existed. They are a happily married couple and parents of two daughters, Olivia and Naomi.
