Emma Stonethe winner of the Golden Globe for poor creatures, reflects on the work it took to bring Bella Baxter to life and the rewards of a creative endeavor well accomplished the address of Yorgos Lanthimoswhich will be nominated for best director at the next Oscars.
The film will be released in Ecuadorian cinemas this month Thursday January 25.
What was the most interesting thing to discover about Bella Baxter’s character?
Bella is the love of my life. When Yorgos explained it to me at the beginning of the process, I felt like it was very similar to her. The opportunity to be a woman who was never submissive or vulnerable really excited me. She was not raised in a society that places the typical restrictions on women, so she can explore the world without limitations. With Bella, the opportunity to be a person from birth to adulthood in the body she will always be in was incredible. He has no prejudices, he is not ashamed of anything, not even when it comes to his sexuality. It’s the way she sees the world and how she responds to that world, not how people respond to her. Socially, we are formatted to think, “Do people like me?” And she’s not like that at all. I miss Bella so much and sometimes I try to think what she would have done in my place. It was a gift to play for her.

What evolution does the main character have?
She learns from the men she meets, from the women she meets, from the environment she finds herself in, from what she eats. He is like a sponge, he learns everything. She very quickly goes from the mindset of a baby to that of a girl or teenager, how she sees herself and what she wants, to a mindset of how she can be useful to society. about how you can create something for the outside world. At the beginning of the film, everything is hedonism, pleasure and enjoyment. Then, halfway through, she realizes that there is cruelty and pain in the world.
Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ is the Oscar favorite with 13 nominations
Do you think there’s a reason why this film, which fits so well into the present, hasn’t been made before?
I don’t think there is any reason why the film wasn’t made sooner, but I think the fact that Yorgos Gay met Alasdair (author of the novel that inspired the film) and had his permission to make the film from scratch, was very important.. Yorgos is the only person who could make this film. Of course my point of view is biased, but I don’t know anyone who could have done it at the level it was done. We adapted the story from Bella Baxter’s point of view, which I think is something extraordinary, because the book isn’t like that.

What was it like working with Mark Ruffalo?
Mark is very committed to his work and is very funny. He resonates with the character he plays, so there were a lot of torturous moments for Mark throughout the process. As time went on, he leaned more and more on the madness and humor of Duncan Wedderburn.
In ‘Poor Creatures’, Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) reminds us of childhood wonder and innocence
And Willem Dafoe?
He is also very funny. He is joking and cheerful, and very pleasant to be around. He has a lot of life experience and doesn’t judge anyone. He’s very free, so he has a very nice energy, and I think he’s also a generous and present actor. I think he is a real companion for the team. In ‘The Poor Creatures’, Bella Baxter (Emma Stone) reminds us of the wonder and innocence of our childhood.

What would you like to highlight about Tony McNamara’s work and his film adaptation of the book?
One of Tony’s greatest talents is dialogue, and I noticed in all three films that there were “Tony-isms” that were repeated. He has some favorite words or phrases that he likes, and it’s a lot of fun. The way he writes and how he manages to find humor in every situation, even if the situation is tragic, is something unique. His bond with Yorgos is extraordinary because they can shape ideas together as they work. I love Tony and I don’t think there’s anyone like him, especially when it comes to dialogue.
