Basque Government and Provincial Council give themselves two years to decide whether to go ahead with the Guggenheim in Urdaibai

He Board of Trustees of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbaoin which the American leadership and the institutions of Euskadi participate, there have been two years of reflection, this year and 2025, to decide whether to go ahead with the expansion in Urdaibai (Bizkaia), as the Lehendakari has announced, Inigo Urkullu.

The Lehendakari met this Monday in Vitoria-Gasteiz with the general deputy of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobeto analyze joint projects, especially in the Busturialdea region, where the Urdaibai biosphere reserve is located and the expansion of the museum would go.

In the subsequent press conference, the Lehendakari explained that the museum’s board of trustees has given “a time of reflection” about this project. So far, the Bizkaia Provincial Council has been the promoter of the idea, while the Basque Government has not given explicit support.

Even asked directly if he is in favor of the museum in Urdaibai, Urkullu answered: “A specific position is not easy”.
