Singer Maite Idirin dies

The singer Maite Idirin died this Saturday at the age of 80. Idirin gave many recitals in the 1960s. In 1969 she had to go into exile because she was persecuted by the police. Euskaltzaindia named her an honorary academic in 2014.

Maite was born in Ugao in 1943. She gave her first concert in 1968, in Zeberio and that same year she published the album Atahualpa Yupanki. In subsequent years he offered many recitals together with the singer Bittor Egurrola.

In 1969 she had to go into exile because she was persecuted by the police. She left the port of Bermeo for Baiona, and from there she went to Paris. In Paris she was working at Café Candelaria. It was in that city where she met her husband Jokin Apalategi.

In 1973 she returned to Donibane Lohitzune and was one of the founders of the Zabal de Baiona bookstore. She was also a member of the Ortziken collective and when the group broke up she enrolled at the Baiona conservatory and made the leap to the classical genre.

Euskaltzaindia named her an honorary academic in 2014. The story of her life has been collected in the book that her husband Apalategi and his friend Iztueta have written jointly.
