The polonaise from “Pan Tadeusz”, composed by Wojciech Kilar, is a frequent choice of high school students. This song was danced by students of the Automotive School Complex in Radom preparing for their exams. Michał Ankiewicz, who describes himself as a “brave artist with a head full of ideas”, is responsible for the choreography. He posted the video on social media.
They will take care of cars, now they are dancing at the prom
It must be admitted that high school graduates are increasingly surprising with interesting ideas. This time, in addition to traditional elements of the arrangement, such as a tunnel or formation in fours, the choreographer enriched the classic polonaise with, among others, lifting. However, the greatest impression on the audience was made by the moment when some of the dancers “moved” beyond the group of other dancers in a very impressive way. Watch the video:
Kilar’s polonaise
The polonaise is one of the symbols of Polish national culture, which in Old Polish was called “chodone”. The characteristic steps and figures were established in 1987-1989 by the Council of Experts on Folklore of the Ministry of Culture and Art.
For many years, the polonaise in A minor, composed by Michał Ogiński, reigned supreme during proms. The composition is also called “Farewell to the homeland”. However, after the premiere of Andrzej Wajda’s “Pan Tadeusz”, the song from the soundtrack of this production faced him with great competition. Although the composer’s credits included, among others, cooperation with Francis Ford Coppola on the music for the film “Dracula”, it is probably his polonaise that lives most in the consciousness of Poles. Kilar was awarded the Eagle and the Golden Duck for his music to “Pan Tadeusz”.
– During preparations for the filming of “Pan Tadeusz”, I had many doubts regarding the verse text, which was an exceptionally difficult challenge. However, once I shot the film, it turned out that dialogues spoken in verse were better than prose. And Wojciech Kilar knew it earlier and did something that has never happened to me before – (quoted by Radio Lublin on the 10th anniversary of Kilar’s death) Andrzej Wajda. – He sent me a CD with the recording and a note in which he wrote that it was a polonaise that should be used in the film “Pan Tadeusz”. He asked me to listen carefully because it might give me some tips on how to make a film. I was very touched by it and it strengthened our friendship even more – explained the director.
