Statuettes during the gala are awarded to the winners of the following categories: Film, Theater, Book, Visual Arts, Classical Music, Popular Music and Digital Culture. This year, the eighth Passport, awarded by readers, was also presented for the first time. This year’s Polityka Passports gala was hosted by Grażyna Torbicka and Jerzy Baczyński. Olga Tokarczuk, winner of the Passport in the “Culture Creator” category in 2019, was also present in the audience.
“Polityka” passports, among others, for Paweł Maślon and Katarzyna Szyngiera
The first prize in the “Film” category for “showing in the film ‘Kos’ a Poland virtually unknown from history textbooks” went to director and screenwriter Paweł Maślona, who appeared on the stage clearly surprised and moved. “This is a great honor for me and I say it seriously, because politics has been with me since my father first showed it to me, then I remember the times of Janina Paradowska, in the ‘Pod Jaszczurami’ club in Krakow and I have the feeling that since then Light years have passed since what happened to politicians and the political class in Poland, it is unbelievable. And even more so because of the wonderful artists who stood here before me… it is touching for me… I would like to dedicate this award to those from whom I have received so much.” Nina Lewandowska, Kamila Tarabura and DK Welchman were also nominated in the category.
The award in the “Theatre” category went to Katarzyna Szyngiera, director, screenwriter and reporter, who, in cooperation with Marcin Napiórkowski, Mirosław Wlekły and Andrzej “Webber” Mikosz, produced the musical 1989. “I would like to thank all the people I met on my creative path, especially those , with whom I co-created “1989”… I also wanted to thank my hometown of Gdańsk, because without the support of the city and the Pomeranian Voivodeship Marshal’s Office, this show would not have been created. You probably know that it was created in a difficult political situation…”
The award in the “Digital Culture” category went to Starward Industries for their debut game “Invincible”, based on the novel of the same title by Stanisław Lem. The winner in the “Visual Art” category was Marta Nadolle, known for the famous exhibition “Paint Means Blood” at the Museum of Modern Art. “I have a few more words for artists, but not artists who are popular, no, it’s not for them. I have a few words for artists who are ignored by galleries, who feel invisible… Who don’t even have a chance to think about life in art, so they take jobs, but not jobs that give prestige in society or at family events. These are ordinary jobs such as teachers, shop assistants, or making tombstones… I wanted to say that you are awesome… You are also indestructible, because how much strength do you have to have to work for pay, come back tired after work, and then not rest, but continue working with the mission?
The award in the “Book” category went to Jacek Świdziński for “the graphic novel ‘Festiwal’, which brilliantly tells the epic story of the Youth Festival.” “Mainly I would like to thank my mother, because she is a better artist than me. I still show her everything I have drawn and she makes corrections to me,” the winner said on stage.
The winners in the “Classical Music” category were Karolina Mikołajczyk and Iwo Jednocki. The duo received the award for “versatility and the ability to navigate different musical worlds”. The award in the “Popular Music” category went to Hania Rani. The special award “Creator of culture” was awarded to Józef Hen. After “Culture Creator”, it’s time for a new category. The eighth Passport of “Polityka” was the “Reader’s Award”. It was received by Adam Zieliński “Łona”.
