Depression, ataxia and “very rare” arthritis: Illnesses that Cristina Saralegui went through after leaving television 10 years ago

In 2010, the program “El show de Cristina”, producer and host Cristina Saralegui She said goodbye to Univisión forever, and with that, the journalist and presenter also said goodbye to the screen.

Although she later had a spot on Telemundo, she stayed away from television for more than a decade with only a few sporadic appearances on other programs.

In the first days of January 2024, the Cuban American reappeared on social networks thanks to the post of Emilio Estefan who announced that his friend “ready for everything to come”, is the sentence that raised expectations among Instagram users about the possible return of Cristina Saralegui to television.

What disease does Cristina Saralegui suffer from?

After Cristina Saralegui left Univisión, the presenter fell into depression, remembers El Heraldo de México.

“Yes, I became terribly depressed because I had been working since I was 17. “I really, really, really miss having things to do all the time,” she revealed in an interview in which she admitted that she had been fired from the television network.

However, the journalist also suffered from another illness that took her to the operating room for brain surgery. Saralegui presented ataxiaa disease in which water accumulates in the brain.

According to the Mayo Clinic, ataxia “consists of poor muscle control that causes clumsy voluntary movements. It can cause difficulty with walking and balance, hand coordination, speech and swallowing, and eye movement.”

But that is not the only health problem that the famous 75-year-old presenter faced. He also suffers from a “rare” type of osteoarthritis, for which he is undergoing experimental treatment, he said in an interview with People en Español.

“I have a form of arthritis that is very rare. It is genetic and rare. They give me a new experimental drug which is an injection in the leg and Marco (her husband) gives it to me; They gave me that injection for two years and it helped me a lot,” he admitted to the magazine when he was just 73 years old. He will turn 76 next January 29.

This experimental treatment, to which she was subjected for several years, significantly weakened her immune system, so during the pandemic she was subjected to extreme care not to get infected because it could “kill” her.

Arthritis has affected Cristina Saralegui’s life so much that today she has certain problems with walking, and with the increase in weight, it is even more difficult for her to move.

“I have a lot of arthritis, I’m very lame because it’s hard for me to walk a lot, but apart from that I’m very good emotionally,” she said in another interview quoted by the Su Médico website. (AND)
