Katarzyna Grochola is currently one of the most widely read Polish writers. He has 15 great books to his credit, which have sold over 4 million copies in total. Although she achieved great success professionally, her private life was full of turmoil and traumatic moments.
Grochola’s second husband used violence against her. She kept it a secret
The writer has two failed marriages behind her. She got married for the first time at the age of 21, and the result of this marriage is her only daughter, . Later, she remarried, under the illusion that she would create a happy family with her new partner. However, reality quickly verified her ideas. She kept the fact that the man was using violence against her a secret for a long time. – I didn’t see any warning signs, there was no indication that I could get involved with an executioner, so I felt terrible shame – .
In an interview for the program, Grochola talked about one of her most traumatic memories. – My tormentor grabbed the chair from under me and hit me in the neck with the leg of the chair, which broke. At that moment, the doorbell rang and our friends showed up, she reported. Her face showed pain, but her partner quickly explained to the guests what was causing it, seeming extremely caring. – I didn’t know what was happening, I was holding my vertebrae. He said: “Kasieńka hit herself, I have to put ice on her.” I suddenly felt so cared for, and they were delighted that he was so nice to me, she said. For this reason, she was also afraid to tell anyone what was happening behind closed doors because she thought no one would believe her.
Dorota Szelągowska’s mother recalls life under the same roof as her torturer. Today she does not regret leaving him
The bitterness overflowed when Grochola’s husband started treating her badly as well. – He beat me, drank me and was oppressive towards my daughter – . However, she still stood by him because she was afraid that if he took any legal action, he would take revenge on her. The writer’s then-teenage daughter opposed her despotic stepfather and tried to support her mother in the most difficult moments. When a man made a fuss, she knew how to behave to effectively stop him. – The door was broken, an attempt was made to strangle me, the telephone wire was torn from the wall. My daughter then pretended that the phone was still working. She said loudly, “Please come immediately.” And then my husband got scared – she recounted one of many incidents. She then went to the police, but eventually withdrew her testimony. – Knowing that I would come home where he would be and find out about it was paralyzing – she said in “Dzień Dobry TVN”.
However, something inside her broke, and her daughter’s attitude gave her the strength to put an end to it once and for all. – Dorota defended herself when he shouted at her. She once dismantled the exercise bike he was using. He fell off it. And it was thanks to her that I got out of that relationship. She saved our lives – admitted the author in an interview with Wirtualna Polska. Finally, after 3 years, she ran away from home. When it came to light that her ex-husband had been abusing his next partner’s daughter, she only became more convinced that he was a bad person. – He was not only an alcoholic and an executioner, but also a pedophile, it was an additional burden – the writer. Today she returns to these memories to give strength to other women who, like she once, are afraid to fight for the safety of themselves and their children.
