The Lee Strasberg Theater & Film Institute announced the death of Anna Strasberg, widow of the outstanding acting teacher Lee Strasberg and heir to the estate and copyright of Marilyn Monroe. The actress died at the age of 84.

Anna Strasberg is dead. The actress died at the age of 84. She was a co-founder of The Lee Strasberg Theater & Film Institute, where, as artistic director, she promoted the scientific achievements of her late husband, Lee Strasberg. “Anna made the Institute a beacon for aspiring actors and remains a valued space for artistic exploration and development… Her presence will be greatly missed, but her legacy will live on through the teachings of method acting and each class of passionate students.” – writes the center.

Anna Strasberg was born on April 16, 1939 in Caracas, Venezuela. When she began her acting career, she moved to the United States, where she met theater director Lee Strasberg. The acting teacher was then the director of the Actors Studio, where James Dean, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, among others, studied. Anna and Lee married in 1968. The couple had two children: Adam and Dawid.

Lee Strasberg died of a heart attack in 1982. The director was the heir to part of Marilyn Monroe’s estate, which then went to Anna. The actress auctioned off some of the famous star’s items, including a piano given to her by her mother and the dress she wore during the “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” performance. She sold the rest of her property for several million dollars. In 2000, Anna founded Marilyn Monroe LLC, which was sued in 2006 by three photographers over its possession of Monroe’s licensing rights.
