Movies taking place in 2024. This is how the future was imagined. It’s not fun

The second part of the movie “Back to the Future” takes place in 2015, “Blade Runner” shows the year 2019. These are just two of many examples of films that show the fairly near future. The futuristic ideas of screenwriters and writers did not always turn out to be accurate. How did they imagine 2024?

According to the movie “2015” was full of modern inventions. Some of them were actually created, although not always in 2015. Flying cars, skywalkers, hoverboards, intelligent clothing, shoes that tie themselves, holograms… And yet the heroes still use fax machines. However, this is the best example of the fact that production creators cannot always accurately predict what will happen in the future. What did they predict for 2024?

The year 2024 according to creators from over half a century ago. “Beyond the barrier of time” and nuclear war

“Beyond the Barrier of Time” is a 1960 production directed by Edgar G. Ulmer. Production cost PLN 125,000. dollars and today it belongs to niche productions. The film was made in times of nuclear panic and this is the main theme. The main character travels in time. It goes to 2024, to a futuristic city, the Citadel. He learns that as a result of nuclear weapons tests, the Earth’s atmosphere has been destroyed. Those who did not manage to find shelter underground are consumed by a “cosmic plague”. No child has been born in the Citadel for 20 years, so the main character has the task of restoring the population… The creators’ fears certainly did not come true.

2024 straight from the game “Fallout”. “A Boy and His Dog” was its prototype

Concerns about war and nuclear weapons also became the subject of the production that inspired the game “Fallout”. “A Boy and His Dog” from 1975 is considered a cult production. The main character, Vic (played by Don Johnson, known from “Miami Vice”), travels through the American wasteland in 2024, together with his dog, which are the remnants of a nuclear war that lasted five days. Civilization has gone underground, where underground cities straight from the 1950s have been built, and for the inhabitants the most desired goods are food, weapons and… women. Each of them is governed by a Council of Elders. Sounds scary? Fortunately, these visions are far from being fulfilled.

This is how they saw 2024 in 2018. “Illang: The Wolf Brigade” tells the story of conflicts in Asia

“Illang: The Wolf Brigade” from 2018 is a South Korean production and can be watched on Netflix, although today it is no longer available to Polish viewers. It was also received with mixed feelings. The action begins in 2024, when territorial and political disputes between China, Japan and South Korea finally lead to the demilitarization of Japan. Faced with the growing influence of the US and Russia in Asia, South and North Korea decide to merge. However, this has a severe impact on the economies of both countries. Crime is rising in South Korea and social unrest is also rising. A terrorist group is formed, and the titular Wolf Brigade, a special unit, is tasked with restoring order.
