As we can read in the Central Statistical Office, in 2022 the average Pole generated as much as 355 kg of municipal waste. In total, over 13.4 million tons were collected, of which only 5.36 million were collected or collected selectively, i.e. in a way that made them suitable for recycling. That is why it is so important to properly manage and segregate waste. Sometimes, however, this seemingly simple activity can be difficult. Which containers should you throw away egg cartons into?
Are egg cartons recyclable? Cardboard should not always end up in paper
Egg containers, i.e. so-called egg trays, are a simple way to safely transport them from the store and store them in the refrigerator. For obvious reasons, they may differ in size or shape, but they are also made of different materials. This does not change the fact that in almost every case they are recyclable, which is why their segregation is very important. Most often, we come across those made of cardboard. Then they should be thrown away into the blue container, i.e. on paper – as long as they are dry and clean. Why? Well, jIf there is a remnant of an egg or shell in the extruder that cannot be removed, then it is placed in a black container, i.e. for mixed waste.
Where to throw away Styrofoam egg packaging? Where there’s plastic
In addition to cardboard, egg packaging is also made of plastic or Styrofoam. In both cases clean and dry stampings should be thrown into a metal waste container and plastics, i.e. yellow ones. What if they are dirty? Then, similarly to the situation with cardboard ones, their place is in the black container for mixed waste.
What to do with egg cartons? A basket is not the only solution
Almost every larger store offers eggs in a carton, so it’s no wonder that they usually end up in the trash. If you don’t like generating more waste, you can reuse it. In spring they are suitable for sowing cress or vegetables such as tomatoes. You can also make lovely decorations or a box for storing jewelry out of them. As a last resort, you can also take them to small grocery stores or those that only sell eggs, where they will certainly continue to be used.
