Cosmetic companies are doing everything they can to sell consumers newer devices for removing hair from the entire body. Most media still promote the idea that a woman should not have a millimeter of hair anywhere other than on her head. It should be noted that the hair on the arms, legs, arms and intimate areas is completely natural and protects the skin.
Therefore, Sierra decided that there was basically no reason to get rid of her natural hair – apart from broadly understood “social expectations”, which she simply stopped caring about. She added that her husband had nothing against it – what’s more, he even agreed with her opinion. She revealed to her followers (of whom she has over 300,000!) that she stopped shaving at the age of 24. And he intends to stay that way.
She gave up hair removal. “I like body hair”
She explained that when she was growing up, shaving was an “obligation” and from her perspective, there was no conscious choice in this regard. She added that at that time, women’s hair was perceived as “disgusting, shameful, unfeminine.” – (…) So we had to deal with it and hide it – she added.
Social pressure in this regard meant that Sierra shaved almost every day until she was 24. The breakthrough was the period of the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting lockdown. She left the house much less often and rarely saw her friends. Instead, she started publishing videos on YouTube. One of them concerned the issue of hair removal – the influencer shared her experiences when she stopped doing it for 30 days.
Little did I know then that this video would completely change my views on shaving
– she said.
I realized that I wasn’t shaving for myself. I like body hair, I like the look of it and I don’t mind how it feels
– she said.
She stopped shaving at the age of 24. “It’s your body and you can do whatever you want.”
After filming the film, she realized she still “carried the stigma from middle school” related to the issue of hair. “The thing is, my hair grows naturally on my body the same way it grows naturally on my head,” she explained, lifting her arms and showing off her armpits.
“Why is it feminine?” she asked, tugging at a lock of hair on her head. – Isn’t it, since both things are a natural part of me as a woman? – she asked, pointing to the hair under her arms.
It’s your body, you are its boss. You can do what you want. Shave if you want
– she commented.
Internet users liked the film very much. Many of them shared their experiences and observations on this subject. “I love that you’re taking control of your own anatomy!” – wrote one of the commenters.
I think this movie will make me grow my arm hair again. I’m tired of shaving them
– another TikTok user pointed out.
Full body hair removal. Choice or compulsion?
Of course, depilation or lack thereof is a personal choice of each of us, which should not be interfered with by the environment. Everyone has the right to their own aesthetic preferences. It is worth mentioning, however, that the fashion for full body hair removal in women has actually appeared relatively recently. The first advertisement encouraging women to get rid of hair appeared only in 1915 in the iconic American magazine Harper’s Bazaar.
However, we are talking about the United States. In Europe, women began shaving their armpits much later, many years after the end of World War II. In Poland, “zero” hair removal became popular only at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. Anyway, just look at stills from films or magazines from those years – when the biggest movie stars were not ashamed of naturally occurring hair under their arms.
