Jerzy L. was 32 years old when he saw Agnieszka for the first time during a wedding dress show at the La Mirage salon. He was a secret bachelor, a loner, and a graduate of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. He worked as an IT specialist. From that moment on, he couldn’t erase her from his memory. The obsession with her grew every day.
He waited outside her house and sent letters
One day, a man was waiting for her outside the high school where she was studying for her final exams, and then he got on the bus after her and asked if she would allow “the dwarf to escort the princess.” He later recalled that day: “It was the fall of 1991. After that show, I knew where she went to school. What bus she took to get home. She also noticed that a man was watching her, that he was interested in her. We arrived by bus, I walked her home. We talked about normal things, who we knew, we went to the same school. She went into her cage and that was it.” Then he stood outside her house and sent letters as a “folk dwarf”. Agnieszka ignored it.
Before participating in the Miss Poland competition, she entered into a relationship with Jarosław Świątek. He was one of the organizers of the competition at that time, but when their relationship began, he withdrew from the jury’s deliberations. Jerzy L. never accepted the fact that Kotlarska had a partner. He called Świątek a “sponsor”. – I was angry, furious. For me it was not natural that someone becomes a miss and a sponsor appears. No Miss has ever flaunted sponsors, he said later.
Agnieszka Kotlarska and Jarosław Świątek lived like in a fairy tale
When Jerzy L. experienced heartbreak, Agnieszka Kotlarska left the United States. There her career gained momentum. She appeared at Ralph Lauren’s fashion show and flew to photo sessions in Paris, Morocco, Venezuela and Mexico. Step by step she fulfilled her “American dream”. Świątek joined her after a few months and he was the one who took care of the home. – Back then, in New York, we were the happiest – he recalled years later. In 1993, they learned that their family would expand. On December 12, 1993, they welcomed their daughter – Patrycja.
“I dealt a series of strong blows”
In July 1996, Agnieszka Kotlarska was supposed to fly from New York to Paris, but the photo session was postponed. After changing the date, instead of leaving from New York, at her husband’s suggestion, she was supposed to fly to Paris from Poland. Then she miraculously avoided tragedy. A plane from New York exploded shortly after takeoff. They all died.
Jerzy L. read in the press about the miss who miraculously survived. He found out that she had returned to Wrocław. This thought bothered him. He tried to contact her again, and when he was rejected once again, he went to a hunting store and bought a knife.
On August 27, Kotlarska, her husband and daughter were to return to the United States. When they were in the car and about to go to the airport, they saw Jerzy L. He shouted: “Agnieszka, talk to me.” And he hit the roof of the car with his hands. – I asked to talk, she didn’t want to. She kept her left hand on her legs. She had such beautiful hands. And a wedding ring. There was a child sitting in the backseat. My husband climbed out of the car and asked what was going on. He said there was nothing to talk about. Then I asked him: how much did you buy it for? He smiled ironically. He had the face of a winner. He said through his teeth: Sp… Agnieszka handed him the phone. I’m sure he wanted to call the police. I felt like a garbage can that could be thrown away. I took out the knife. He saw him. He said: Oh f… He started to back away. Overturned. He kicked his legs. I leaned down and struck those kicking legs with my knife. Then I felt someone’s hand on my shoulder. Without looking, I landed a series of hard blows. I turned around. It was Agnieszka – he later testified in court. Agnieszka Kotlarska died on the way to the hospital. She turned 24 a few days earlier.
Jarosław L. was sentenced to 15 years in prison. He served his sentence and is currently free. Jarosław Świątek found out that he was still asking about him and his daughter. He constantly has a feeling that he is in danger.
